If brakes are locking clamp all 4 brake hoses using proper brake hose clamps ( vice grips can damage brake hoses if clamped too tight )this will rule out the brakes if problem persists ,,,,, if car is fine when clamped then its a brake prob
em ,, if it is brakes ,release one clamp at a time until you find the ofenndind wheel,,, if problem is still there after clamping im afraid itspronb a trans problem,,,, and yes toiupdating ifcar is not olderr than 2000

I have a pickup that this happened with. I just had to look underneath, find the dangling shifter linkage and plug it back in. Make sure the hardware is there and doesn't look stretched.

SOURCE: rebuilding 1995 honda civic transmission

Did you make sure that the tork converter was all the way forward first if not then you will need to take the transmission back out and make sure that the converter has either automatic trany fluid in it or 184/85 gear oil depending on whether or not you have automatic trasmission or manual fill it up until you can put your finger in it and then rotate converter clock wise and it should slip into place before putting trasmission back into car and if after doing that and you still are having trouble take it to a transmission shop to have them do it for you.

What is wrong with my transmission goes into forward fine but reverse quit without any warning

The reverse bands can break without leaving a burning smell. The instant you put it in reverse, there is a sudden torque as the slack comes out of the drive train, so when it comes tight it can break without slipping or any other warning.

Why does my car shake when going in reverse?

I would suggest running the fault codes but I would check the engine mounts for failure. In normal drive forward situation the reaction of the motor is on one set of mounts but in reverse the reaction is put on to the opposite side mounts

When i put the car in drive it wont move an when i try to back up it wont move i have a mercury mountaineer

I'm sorry to say that you will either have to rebuild the transmission or replace it. All transmissions will start out in 1st. gear when put in drive. Oddly enough this is also the same gear that is used when you are in reverse. please let me know if you need help with anything else.

Transmissions

1500 series truck uses the 4L60E transmission, and a common failure on that model is the reverse sun shell. The shell has a collar with splines that engage splines on the sun gear. The shell either strips the splines,or breaks the collar,.either way,the shell is inoperative and needs replacing.Aftermarket transmission parts businesses sell a heavy duty version of this reverse shell, called the beast. It is made of much thicker steel and won't strip or break.
