SOURCE: Method for changing Spark Plugs out on '99 Jeep Wrangler TJ 6CYL

Plugs is easy.

I use only Valvoline as it doesn't tend to gum or sludge my engines like Penzoil or Quaker State did.

I assume this is a 4WD since your asking about the gearbox, and it's an automatic.

I have a knock sensor and a 1 -misfire code. I recently gave my car a tune up and within a month i had a check engine light on. Can you tell me what i should check? Thanks

If you could elaborate a bit more on what was done to the car we could pinpoint the problem right away. However, typically a tune up is plugs, wires, cap, and filter. Given those four changes, I would point my finger at the plugs. Many of times spark plugs do not come pre-gapped. Meaning the distance between the metal and the electrode, white looking ceramic are not measured per spec. If you did not gap the plugs, I would recommend taking them out and adjusting the gap to spec. You can call the dealer and ask them for the recommended spec. I have attached a pic of a spark plug with an arrow indicating how the gap is measured. You will need a feeler gauge to measure the gap and adjust.rltofixya_3.jpg

Without proper gap the engine can/will misfire.

Spark plugs and gap

call an autoparts store and tell them you want a price on sparkplugs for your (in this order) 1998, Ford, Contour, then tell them which engine you have (4 or 6 cylander). Then ask for the gap recommended (this information should be in the parts store computer) Also, there is a sticker under the hood (or possibly on the underside of the hood) with tuning specifications like spark plug gap and timing for the engine. Good luck

Needs tune up what parts do i need

spark plugs, fuel filter pcv valve, spark plug wires higher quality, wd40 to lubricate all movable throttle parts, (cables) etc, on this car rotor or cap usually do not apply. make sure your spark plugs are gapped correctly and be careful not to drop them on the ground or get them dirty from oil debris around spark plug holes when installing new plugs. Your owners manual will give you maintainence information on suggested and required maintainence, if your miles are 40,000 or more since the last tuneup suggest you have the transmission oil and trans filter changed (new trans filter kit and silicone would be needed) Good Luck and I hope this was very helpful to you
