Question about 1996 GMC Sierra

1 Answer

Transmission 5.7 motor I was driving for about two hours it ran great going up some hills and flat then flat land it shifted fine with no slippages we pulled over twice fix the camper door other wise ran great, I got back in my truck started motor sounds great shifted it into Drive mode it started to move the motor sounded grappy it was spudering, and the truck hardly moved and it had no reverse gear also and then no drive. I let the truck set a bit about 5 mins and then tried to restarted it runs great till i stick it in gear and this time i have reverse, but a shakey engine and a trans that seams it wants to move but the engine is holding it back the way it is running, and then reverse went away again on this trans with no signs before this problems I'm a good old mechanic but was wondering is there a fuse or something that might control that. Sorry for the novel just wanted to give you good insight what was going on with the truck. thanks.

Get an engine transmission warranty through an oil company like castrol or something. Should cover it for free no matter what happens for the period of the warranty.

i had to put a new trans in my 2000 jimmy about a year ago there is something inside called a "reverse hub" its made from aluminum and not very hard to break..when mine broke i was stuck trying to move in reverse and it heard a pop then a winding down noise and sure enough its the reverse hub to fix it i just had the trans rebuilt

SOURCE: My reverse went out but only go forward!

Arthur,

Shouldnt be a big deal.

Your shift linkage is probably bent.

You will need to go to a trans shop and get it fixed.

I highly recommend AAMCO since they warranty their work. They will have to "unbend" the bracket or readjust the cable play, or repair the linkage that places the car in the proper gear according to your indicator on steering column or dash.

Not a big deal...but then again you could have crushed the synchro gears, but i truly doubt it!

Thanks,
Mark

SOURCE: Loss of power, transmission not shifting

i know the camp verde hill of which you speak , last vehicle in the shop with that same scenario , after doing everything possible including a catalyst check , as we could not duplicate the problem , we replaced fuel pump at owners request and next trip he confirmed it was a fix .

1998 land rover discovery transmission makes loud banging noise when shifting from pari to drive?

Tons of possibilities here (transmission, differential, motor mounts, transmission mounts....), so I'll ask some debug questions to help narrow it down. Does it make the noise when shifting into reverse? Also, does it make the noise only when shifting from park, or also when shifting from neutral (into drive or into reverse)? Did the noise start as an occasional, softer noise and get worse over time, or did it start suddenly? Does the vehicle lurch at the same time as the noise? What happens when you go from Reverse to Drive, or vice versa? Has any work been done recently (brakes, tires, alignment, suspension, transmission)?

What is loud thumping noise under hood when transmission tries shifting

This could be motor or transmission mounts. Check to be sure they are tight and not broken.
