There's a sound like a bad bearing coming from the water pump but no water coming out of the weep hole. i'm guessing the pump is bad. is this common for this car?

Bearings on a water pump failing on any car is a common problem! The water leaking from around the water pump area is the tell tale sign.........get it checked out and replaced as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the engine.

WATER PUMP

if the water pump is bad, it will leak from the weep hole on bottom of pump. unless the bearings seize up on pump and will not turn. you will see coolant running from bottom.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY WATER PUMP IS BAD?

There are a number of hints that can signal failure. The obvious ones are when the pump fails catastrophically and causes rapid water loss, the fan wobbles and possible damages the radiator, etc.
However, that is not always the case in impending failures. Squealing can be a sign of pump bearing failure. Pudding of coolant under the front center of the vehicle is a telltale sign of pump leakage. Water pumps have a "weep hole" that lets a small amount of coolant escape when the bearing sleeve is wearing out. But you can be losing coolant from the pump and not see the puddle because in the early stages of failure, the pump will only weep while running. Then the fan blows the coolant back onto the block where it evaporates. You can look for the weep hole on the bottom side of the water pump where the shaft enters the sleeve. Look for signs of coolant streaking or small gatherings of coolant on engine parts just below the pump. The primary consideration is that there is coolant going missing. You may be able to remove the serpentine belt and wiggle the pump shaft to see if there is any side-to-side play in it. There should be none.

Leaking water pump how to fix

When the water pump leaks, it is time to go. You need to get a new one on there. That is the telltale sign of a bad pump, all cars, trucks, even washing machines have the same pump. Check it out, hope this helps.

What are the signs of a water pump problem

A water pump problem will begin with a small quantity of leaking water from the top or bottom of the pump from a small depression called a weep hole. This lets you know the pump will fail soon and the "seal" inside where the blades turn is "rocking back and forth" and is no longer solid. The water pump will cause you to have low coolant and your fans may kick on while you are driving rather than when you are stopped in traffic. Then the pump will begin to make a grinding noise as it fails worse and the vehicle may overheat due to low circulation. To test the pump, remove the drive belt and turn the pulley for the water pump by hand. If it is NOT SMOOTH it is time to replace it.

I have 1998 740i BMW that is overheating. 1) What are the warning signs of a bad water pump? 2) What are the warning signs of a blown head gasket? 3) What are the warning signs of bad timing?

Timing - engine is not sounding right or back firing.
Head gasket - water and oil mixing, see inside water bottle. or open bottle. rev engine when cold, if starts spitting water out while cold like a fountain.
Water pump - Water leaking from side of engine. or when car started and water bottle is open and no circulation is visible could be signs of water pump
Remember - Block radiator lines can also cause over heating problems and lack of water circulation.

I have a periodic squeeling noise comming from under the hood and i've noticed that the fan /pully system jumps or bucks on occasion - is that a sign that my water pump is going?

No, a sign your water pump is going would be your water pump springing a leak through the weep hole, or your engine start to run hot, fast (but that can also be caused by a thermostat, a bad sensor, or blown head-gasket).

Likely-hood is your belt simply need to be replaced, take off the accessory belt and bend it backwards, if you see deep cracks or threads the belt is bad, if you don't then it could be your tensioner pulley going out.
