Are you using an Innova code reader? I had this when I used one of the Innova 3030 code readers. I called and they said they were QC codes from manufacturing.

SOURCE: Code P0118 on Audi A4 - Related to Ignition Coil Problem?

Hi, the sensor on the engine (right at the rear end of the cylinder head) has two separate outputs. One drives the temperature gauge and the other provides data for the engine control unit. The output for the engine control unit is almost certainly faulty and the sensor will need to be replaced. It isn't an expensive item and's not time consuming to replace (1/2 hr) - so you could ask Audi to do it for you when they replace the ignition coils.
Hope that helps Matt..

Code active, unplug coolant sensor dash gauge stops reading

What make vehicle ? some vehicles have two coolant sensors . One for temp. gauge an another one for the ECM / PCM input. Do you have a check engine light lit ?

A DTC will be set if an abnormal reading occurs, P0116 for sensor performance, P0117 low input or

P0118 for a high input. The coolant temperature sensor temperature reading should closely match the

air charge/manifold temperature reading on a scan tool if the engine has not been run for over an hour.
The sensor circuit can be checked for proper voltage using a voltmeter.

Trouble codes p0118 temperature po118

code p0118 refers to engine coolant temperature (ETC) sensor ---circuit malfunction===causes---coolant thermostat---wiring open circuit/short to positive---wiring short to ground---ground wire defective---ECT sensor.. The temp gauge works off a temperature sender unit separate to the coolant sensor and if it is reading 100 then it indicates an overheat situation in the engine . Probably why the engine light is coming on. As the thermostat is in the list of causes I would replace it as a precaution. The coolant sensor is what tells the CPU to turn on the electric fans to cool the radiator

1998 sunfire temperature gauges quits working as soon as cooling fan comes on and check engine came on P0118 code

You may have a problem with the engine temp sensor or the wiring.
The fan would come on if the computer lost the signal from the sensor rather than the sensor failing because of the fan.
Low coolant is another possible cause.

Sluggish start or wont start P0118

Code is for coolant temp high.

It may be as simple as jjust replacing the coolant temp sensor, although check the harness for damage first and repair.
