Question about 1999 Peugeot 406
After start the engine sometimes fails to run when car is in non accelerate mode or waiting on green light. The engine stops as switched off. there is no problem starting it again. If car is running releacing the cluch pedal will make it start up again. when the engine is warm it works perfectly. It has newer happend on the highway. (Idle trotel control has been cleaned before. But the problem is not like it was when that one was dirthy)
(1) Check the ground (earth system). It is the most common fault of Peugeot from new. (2) check the ignition coil pack, it is the time to renew. (3) check fuel injector for dirty (4) check vacuum leak (5) renew your air filter and spark plug. Use Denso Iridium 0.4 mm 20 grade. Is it old XU engine or newer EW engine ? There spark plugs are different. Set the gap to 0.9 mm. Must be very careful to do so. Check the fault code from the ECU whether the TPS, AIC or O2 sensors at fault as well. Peugeot 406 is a very reliable car if you know it behaviour and service it properly. I have a 2004 406 Coupe 2.0 auto. Up to this present it has no fault at all. Even a blown fuse or light bulb or small piece of rust.

SOURCE: car wont rev
under the bonnet on the back of the mechanical pump there is a unit held in by 2 bolts
remove this unit and on the end there is a tiny filter
this will need cleaning because when the lift pump brakes down tiny parts of it get sucked up through the pipes and clog the filter
it may be best to feplace the fuel filter aswell

In is possable you have a faulty coolant temp sensor.
This could be confirmed by having a diagnosis check done at a garage.
It might have 2 sensors fitted so if it needs them make sure you replace the right one

Here are the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle, it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and/or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving
