Question about 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 Club Cab

1 Answer

My 1995 dodge ram 1500 will bottom out going up hills. When you accelerate at about 2.5 rpms it drops out and won't gain any power

It will start out fine but as soon as I reach an incline that is more than just a quick little hill it starts stuttering and when you accelerate and push on the gas pedal at around 2.5 rpms it drops out like it is going to stall. If you let off of the gas it will just putter and barely go 20 mph

Your fuel pump is not being supplied with adequate fuel pressure to deliver to your engine on an incline because of an obstruction in the fuel tank that changes from level to inclined. I have seen this on many vehicles over 15 years old mostly from rust, debris, and just plai bad gas. Have the fuel tank removed, cleaned and a new "Fuel Sock" (a sort of filter device made of a wire mesh) installed and the fuel lines blown out from front to rear. This should give you plenty of get up and go no matter what the angle your vehicle is in.

SOURCE: 1999 ram 1500 5.2l 4wd no power up hill and no

This could be anything from an ignition issue to a clogged catalytic converter. If the converter is clogged you may have a fueling issue that caused it to break down prematurely. This would have to be addressed before replacing the cat that is if the cat is plugged. Now if you have an ignition issue this also could cause the cat to deteriorate quicker. Either way it sounds like your going to have to have a professional look at it. Now if your lucky it may just be a bad sensor. But the question is which one. Again this is money wisely spend if you leave this to a professional.

if the truck feels like,
the more gas you give it the slower it goes,
you might want to check for a converter plugging up.

Have you checked for a broken valve spring. Repaired a dodge engine with the same running issue as you have described and it was a broken intake valve spring.

I lose vacuum on my a/c when climing hills

Under more throttle/acceleration vacuum will drop. Start from the intakes vacuum source and follow the line(s). Should go off to a resivour at some point. Make sure no lines are broken and that the resivour is not split.

I had a similiar problem on my 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 Conversion Van. It ended up being a partial collapse of the catalytic converter which didn't allow adequate exhaust. The problem only showed itself because I could not get over 55 mph going up a small hill.

2001 Dodge Ram 1500 engine sputters at low rpm

hello i am a independent shop owner and i recently had a 01' dodge 1500 5.2L engine and it seemed to have the same symptoms as your car, i checked fuel pressure and it seemed to be around 49 which is still considered normal and also i did check the distributor cap and each spark point had corroded parts on the tips but before i replaced any parts i disconnected the bank 1 sensor 1 oxygen sensor and noticed that the car never sputtered again.. so in my case i recommended to my customer to first replace the o2 sensor! Hope this helps cheers!
