Question about 2000 Mercury Mountaineer

3 Answers

My engine light on our vechicle came on about a week ago. Before the light came on (as soon as we got snow in SD this year 2013) the vehicle was have some touble starting it would take at least two times of turning it on and off before it would actually stay running. It would start the first time but wouldnt be running strong and would fade quick and then we would have to shut it off and restart it. But now the check engine light has just come on and we have still occationally been needing to drive it and its still doing the same thing. Even if the engine is warm and you make a quick stop at the store or get gas and go to start it again you'd think it would start better but it doesnt there's still a hesitation while starting it. I took my basic auto classess in high school but i'm a girl and i have not had this car very long for me to really learn much about it so i could really use some simple instructions on what i should do besides "take it to a mechanic and have them run and engine diagnostic" please help!?!?

Reading the codes is where you have to start. This could the symptom of so many things; bad plug or wire, vacuum issue, coil, etc etc. Otherwise you will waste time and money with people guessing what could be wrong.
Go to Autozone and have them read your fault codes for FREE to narrow it down considerably. You can also buy a code reader these days cheap. Buy an ELM 327 blue tooth module from Amazon from Yongtech or similar for $10-$20, and then download a free mobile blue tooth app on your smartphone or pad such as "Torque" and do it yourself now and in the future, real easy. Also, what year and model car do you have?

Testimonial: "its a 2000 mercury mountaineer. it is not idling high the idle has not changed since we've owned the vehicle. I know how to check the idle and adjust it that was my first guess. Now I think it might just be a sensor but I cant think of one that would cause the vehicle to act up when you start it. I guess Autozone here I come. I just hate going to those places cause they all treat women the same like we don't know anything and if I had the code reader I would just hook it up myself and fix it myself. but what else can I do.... ya know just cause i'm blonde and a women doesn't mean I don't know anything about cars or how to fix them."

Go to AutoZone or somewhere where you can get your codes read for free. Check codes first, for sure.

Sounds like it could be a fuel problem. Not really feasible to diagnose or check on your own. Best thing to do for this is to get the codes checked. It could alternately be an idling problem. Does it seem to idle higher or lower than normal? If this is the problem it can be adjusted rather easily.

SOURCE: gas mileage dropping

While changing all the filters and things, did you change the fuel filter? It could have just been poor quality fuel which can be caused by getting fuel from the bottom of the barrel so to say. If the station you got the gas at was getting low there is a chance that there was water in the fuel. Normally this would cause the vehicle to run a little bit rough, but not always. I would run another tank of fuel through it and see what you get on a second tank.

SOURCE: after putting gas in the car started running rough and is chockin

It wouldn't hurt to change the filter, but it sounds like you got a bad batch of gas, if it was running good before you got gas.
Get a bottle of dry gas and put it in the tank, if there is any water in the gas, that will clear it out, also it wouldn't hurt to put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the tank, I use that stuff all the time to keep the fuel system clean.

SOURCE: Engine will not idle and run when starting in cold weather

Have a mechanic take a look at your throttle position sensor and engine idle sensor. Make him manually adjust them as opposed to just putting in new ones. It may require that you have to have a higher idle than normal. Your underlying cause is going to be that I am sure you have a lot of miles on your engine.

2004 Chevy Cavalier engine light and trac off light

One year ago---your check engine light came on
The PO405 code was for an EGR Valve issue
No mention--- if you had that fixed

A Few Days Ago---you get Trac Light on,that is part of
the ABS Braking System
Now that system has to be diagnosed & repaired, not just
continue to use the car, actually make the repair, before
you do some damage or can't stop the car & worse things happen

Changing Trans Fluid---is NOT a FIX for anything, but should
be done on all vehicles every 3 years.

If the Engine Management System isn't working correctly, then
your trans won't work as it should either

You need to be proactive & immediately have any abnormal
operation or check light problems, at least diagnosed in a few days
of noticing them

You need to stop using any car that isn't 100% & have it
repaired as soon as possible.

Not wait weeks or years.
Being 9 years old, the trans may also have it's own issues

Engine light is on.

Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with some of the components it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the Check Engine or Service Engine Soon lights to tell you that there is a problem and you should have the car diagnosed and repaired. Not fluid related, but could be a small problem that's easy to fix now. Even a loose gas cap can turn the light on. Have a code scan, that's the starting point.
