Hello, I have a 2006 RAV4 3.5L AWD sport Thumping noise coming from rear (perhaps mid/rear) during low speed turning and extreme acceleration or straight acceleration from complete stop. Sounds to me like broken tooth in R diff. few mechanic are suggesting transfer case $$$$$. it is a slow, low frequency thump.. Thank You, Jim
Check you cross joints
Thumping ? you sure an exsaust pipe hanger hasnt broke ? did the mechanics drive your rav ??? if you find its the transfer case just get one from a wrecker yard much cheaper same with rear end gears. i cant tell with out driving your rav .go to 2nd mechanic this shouldnt be hard at all to diagnoise . the first mech shouldnt have a doubt what so ever id be leary .
Could be as simple as a defective tire. I had a similar incident when I drove over wet tar. A mass stuck to one of the wheels. You can check for transfer problems by grasping the linkages and shafts and shaking them for loosness.

its your tyre, if it sounds like a flat when you drive your tyre has warped very difficult to see on a normal inspection, we get it a lot in spain.

all wheel drive i presume... i would suggest it's a universal
joint ... or cv joint if you will
This picture is actually of a machine but cars are basically the same design

Sounds like the roof/floor actuator internal gear is stripped. The only way to fix it is to replace it. Remove the cup holder in the right rear trim panel. remove the 8mm bolts holding actuator and replace.

It does sound like one of the universal joints. If you can raise the back end off the ground engage gear and the faulty u/v joint will make the wheel jump. This will let you know which side it is

Check your suspension bar and check your front strut assembly, jack up the side you here the noise on and pry against the tire to see if you have any movement between the strut housing and the frame, make sure the top strut nuts are tight, if they are next check tie rod ends to see if you have any play, next pull the wheel from the top and bottom to see if it's loose if it is watch while someone else wiggles the tire, you could have a tie rod loose or a king pin loose. Also it could be a wheel-bearing nut. Let me know what you find so I can tell you how to replace it.
