Had my Smart 4-2 mot'd Monday and it needed a suspension arm on the passenger side. This was done on Tuesday. Saturday morning the engine management light came on yet the car runs and sounds fine.

Very seldom does the check engine light being on affect the way the engine runs, so have it tested for the fault that turned the light on, It is called an OBD2 fault code test and is done with a code reader through the diagnostic data link under the dash.

Malfunction indicator light

the light is telling you that there is a problem in the engine management or transmission management systems
The smart ting to do is to have the fault codes read and the problem item repaired/replaced before it becomes a costly replacement

Keeps going into soft safety mode

Take your Smart to a competent mechanic and have it diagnosed. Otherwise, you will be just replacing parts at random without solving the true problem.

I have an ABS fault on a Smart Forfour (Fixya did not let me enter this) and I have also had the use of a fault code reader. The car has needed a replacement ABS sensor as the cable was damaged and no...

from what you are explaining , sounds like it is the sensor , as it only comes back when you start driving.
try replacing left with right side and see what code you get , if it is the right side after replacement then you are sure it is the sensor. if not check the wiring on the left hand side

Service right control

this light is on because a fault has occured in the automatic ride control system, there are many faults poss, so the only smart thing to do is have the dealer run a scanner on the control module and see what fault code is present.
