Multifunction Switch Short in Pontiac Grand Prix

I've been having this problem for a while, my day time running lights work fine but as soon as it gets dark they turn off and my lights don't work at all, no low beams and no high beams. I replaced the multifunction switch and everything started working again for a few months, then it slowly started happening again where they would only work sometimes and now they're not working again. I haven't had problems with anything else, brake lights, rear lights, turn signals, windshield wipers all work fine. I looked at the wiring underneath the steering wheel and the connector piece that slides into the wire harness is starting to melt on one side, it was like this with the old switch too. What could be causing this to happen?

Do you know how to do automotive electrical testing , checking B+ power and ground circuits , using voltage drop ? Do you know how to read a wiring diagram ? Mastering Voltage Drop Testing with Pete Meier and Jerry Truglia

How to read an electrical diagram Lesson 1

The day time running lights module , ambient light sensor , would be a good guess but that's all it would be .Do you know what these are ? Really don't think there is a short in the multifunction switch . Maybe it's time to take to a qualified repair shop , dealer ! Cadillac or Buick .

Daytime Running Lamps (DRL)
The Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) control module is designed to automatically operate the exterior lights depending on the outside light conditions.
The DRL control module operates in 2 modes:
• The day mode
In the day mode, the DRL control module turns ON the low beam headlamps at a reduced intensity when the DRL ambient light sensor detects daylight under the following conditions:
- The ignition switch is in the RUN position.
- The headlamps are OFF.
- The park brake is OFF.
• The low light mode
In the low light mode, the DRL ambient light sensor detects darkness, turning ON the low beam headlamps to full intensity through CKT 10.
Additionally, the DRL ambient light sensor turns ON the following lamps through CKT 9:
- The park lamps
- The side marker lamps
- The license lamps
- The tail lamps

i have the sameproblem. Dealer part was quoted to me at $510.00. All after market parts stores were $350- 450. Try moving the emerg. flasher button while you step on the brakes and someone else watches the lights. I jammed paper beside the button and they work until I can fix it.I had to order the multi-function switch. and you have to pull the air bags to replace it.

Reoccurring Problem with Multifunction Switch

If changing out the "multifunction switch" worked for a while, and some plastic is being heat damaged, I would suspect a poor connection in the wire harness where it terminates into the switch. If a connection is reduced because of broken wire strands or dirty connections, the remaining capacity (of the wire strands or smaller area of contact) must take the full load being demanded by the lighting system, causing the poor connection to get hot, possibly arc and get worse or fail completely in a very short time. I would first try an Electrical contact or switch cleaner and thoroughly clean out the assembly, while checking for loose or cracked connectors. Follow all safety precautions for the cleaner spray, available at auto parts stores.
Try to determine if the switch area is getting enough air flow for cooling.

I have a 2001 potiac grand prix with no tail lights the same bulb work turn signal an brake lights they r fine ive checked all fuses and replaced all bulbs even replaced the light switch still no tail

no, they are not the same. The multifunction switch is on the steering column and controls wipers, turn signals, and hi/low beam headlights. Dash switch is on the dash and generally turns lights on and off and frequently also controls brightness of dash lights. I had a Camry that had the same thing happening...ended up having a toggle switch put in to control the tail lights...fixed the issue.

Headlights not coming on

I'd start with the fuse.Have you tried to dim them yet? I think this is the model where the lights turn on from the turnsignal switch and dim from the same switch, if so this multifunction switch gives problems.

The clicking noise is you concern ? I would replace the turnsignal switch or the hazzard switch.

Good Luck

2000 grand prix day time running lights/blower not working correctly

Believe it or not, but it was a bad ignition switch. I the switch apart and found about 3 different and one in particular that were burned pretty bad. Must have been the circuit that controls the blower and DRL? Found the solution on another blog. I put a new switch on in about 1.5 hours. I does take a couple special tools, very small female torx sockets. Other than that pretty easy.

You wont blow a fuse there is only a circuit breaker protecting this circuit sounds like a shorted master switch unfortunately the easiest way to test is to replace with a good switch

Main headlights wont work but bright headlights do I have a 2006 Gand Prix and at times my day time running lights and my dim headlights go out or will not come on. I have replaced the Multi-Function...

these switches operate on copper slide and most times these slides get corroded with a green substance that a simple sand paper job will take care of however there are a lot of part so have a mechanic do it
