hand tighten then torque to ~ 50lbs in. in an alternation method. Meaning tighten one bolt then go to other side and keep alternating.

I highly recommend you buy a Hanes/Chilton manual for your make and model of car. The manual will tell you inch pounds and torque sequence for tightening the vale cover back on. Usually the sequence works from the center and works it way to the outside bolts. Please rate this reply if you found this helpful.

Where is the pcv valve 2006 ford five hundred


It is under the throttle body area and it is hard to get to unless you are doing the plugs and have it out of the way. My Ford dealer quoted $166 to change the plugs P&L. I did them myself. Look up your PVC valve on rockauto.com to see what it looks like.
1. Remove the 4 transaxle roll restrictor brace bolts.
o To install, clean the bolts using a wire brush, apply new threadlocker to the threads and tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft) .
2. Remove the bolt and the transaxle roll restrictor brace.
o To install, clean the bolts using a wire brush, apply new threadlocker to the threads and tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft) .
3. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve tube from the PCV valve.
4. If equipped, disconnect the PCV valve electrical connector.
5. CAUTION: A new PCV valve must be installed if removed from the cam cover. Damage will occur to the locking mechanism on the PCV valve. Rotate the PCV valve counterclockwise to remove from the valve cover.
6. To install, reverse the removal procedure

Is there a torque amount for tightening the valve covers?


Sure, depends on what engine, but often these are over-tightened thereby distorting valve cover and creating a leak. If they are cheap thin metal stamped covers they should always be checked and straighten as needed when changing gaskets. I usually use adhesive on gasket to the valve cover, but nothing or maybe thin layer of grease on side to engine. Most torque 5 to 7 or 8 ft lbs, but if you see the gasket swelling out around the bolt areas, that is too tight. Use blue loctite to keep bolts from coming loose.

Go to a Ace Hardware store or an automotive store and get a tap for the size of the bore and a tap handle. The tap will re-thread the bore.

What do I need to do if the threads on balancer pulley are striped? When putting bold in it tightens up just not like it should.


are you sure you are using the right bolts. could be metric or standard. you may have to run a thread tap into the holes to clean the threads up first and then try again.

Specs say tighten valve cover bolts to 89 ft. lbs. can't do it. would twist them off. 2002 Pontiac grand prix. I tightened them to maybe 20. what's up with this? Jim


You are right it does it better go 25 or even 35 use common sense the bolt can not handle more than 25 you can always tighten rocker arm cover bolts if it leaks without having to take it apartcansmo_127.gif

Need head bolt torqe for 3100 and should bolts be dry


The bolts should have thread lock on them when installing, and the torque is done in 2 steps. 33 ft lbs. and then 90 deg. after that on the second pass. 3.1L Engine CAUTION
Observe all applicable safety precautions when working around fuel. Whenever servicing the fuel system, always work in a well ventilated area. Do not allow fuel spray or vapors to come in contact with a spark or open flame. Keep a dry chemical fire extinguisher near the work area. Always keep fuel in a container specifically designed for fuel storage; also, always properly seal fuel containers to avoid the possibility of fire or explosion. LEFT SIDE (FRONT)
  1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Drain the cooling system into a suitable container.
  4. Disconnect the top half of the air cleaner assembly, then remove the throttle body air inlet duct.
  5. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe heat shield and crossover pipe.
  6. Disconnect the spark plug wires from spark plugs and looms then route the wires out of the way.
  7. Remove the rocker arm (valve) covers.
  8. Remove upper intake plenum and lower intake manifold.
  9. Remove the left side exhaust manifold.
  10. Remove oil level indicator tube. NOTE: When removing the valve train components they must be kept in order for installation in the same locations they were removed from.
  11. Remove rocker arms nut, rocker arms, balls and pushrods.
  12. Unfasten the cylinder head bolts evenly, then remove the cylinder head from the engine compartment. Remove and discard the gasket. To install:
  13. Clean all the gasket surfaces completely. Clean the threads on the cylinder head bolts and block threads.
  14. Place the cylinder head gasket in position over the dowel pins on the cylinder block so the words THIS SIDE UP are showing.
  15. Coat the bolt threads lightly with sealer, then install finger-tight.
  16. Tighten the cylinder head bolts in sequence to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). With all the bolts tightened make a second pass tightening all the bolts an additional 90°.
  17. Install the pushrods, rocker arms, balls and rocker arm nuts in their proper locations. Tighten the rocker arm nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  18. Install the lower intake manifold and upper intake plenum.
  19. Install the rocker arm (valve) covers.
  20. Install the oil level indicator tube. Insert the dipstick.
  21. Connect the spark plug wires to spark plugs and looms.
  22. Install the left side exhaust manifold.
  23. Install the exhaust crossover pipe and heat shield.
  24. Refill the cooling system.
  25. Install the top half of the air cleaner assembly and the throttle body air inlet duct.
  26. Connect negative battery cable.

RIGHT CYLINDER HEAD (REAR) CAUTION
Fuel Injection systems remain under pressure, even after the engine has been turned OFF. The fuel system pressure must be relieved before disconnecting any fuel lines. Failure to do so may result in fire and/or personal injury.
  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4. Remove the top half of the air cleaner assembly and remove the throttle body air inlet duct.
  5. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe heat shield and crossover pipe.
  6. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  7. Detach the Oxygen (O2) sensor connector.
  8. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
  9. Remove the right side exhaust manifold.
  10. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  11. Disconnect the spark plug wires from spark plugs and wire looms and route the wires out of the way.
  12. Remove the rocker arm (valve) covers.
  13. Remove upper intake plenum and lower intake manifold. NOTE: When removing the valve train components they must be kept in order for installation in the same locations they were removed from.
  14. Remove rocker arms nut, rocker arms, balls and pushrods.
  15. Unfasten the cylinder head bolts evenly, then remove the cylinder head from the engine compartment. Remove and discard the gasket. To Install:
  16. Clean all the gasket surfaces completely. Clean the threads on the cylinder head bolts and block threads.
  17. Place the cylinder head gasket in position over the dowel pins on the cylinder block so the words THIS SIDE UP showing.
  18. Coat the bolt threads lightly with sealer, then install finger-tight.
  19. Tighten the cylinder head bolts in sequence to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). With all the bolts tightened make a second pass tightening all the bolts an additional 90°.
  20. Install the pushrods loosely retained with the rocker arm assemblies. Make sure all pushrods are in the correct locations. Coat the ends of the pushrods with prelube. The intake rods are marked yellow and are 5 3?4 inch long. The exhaust pushrods are marked green and 6 inches long. balls and rocker arm nuts. Tighten the rocker arm nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  21. Install the lower intake manifold and upper intake plenum.
  22. Install the rocker arm (valve) covers.
  23. Connect the spark plug wires to spark plugs and wire looms.
  24. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  25. Install the exhaust manifold.
  26. Connect the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold.
  27. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  28. Connect the Oxygen (O2) sensor wiring.
  29. Install the exhaust crossover pipe and heat shield.
  30. Refill the cooling system.
  31. Install the top half of the air cleaner assembly and the throttle body air inlet duct.
  32. Connect negative battery cable.
  33. Start vehicle and verify that there are no leaks.

How do I remove the right hand (rear) valve cover on my 1998 Lincolne Continental?


  • Open the hood. Pull up on the push pins that hold the engine cover in place. Remove the engine cover.
  • 2 Unbolt the 8 mm bolts on the thin plastic cover that sits on top of the valve cover, using the socket wrench.
  • 3 Pull off the cover to expose the coil packs.
  • 4 Unplug the coil pack by removing the bolt that holds it in place and pull up on the pack to remove it from the engine.
  • 5 Unbolt the spark plug using a spark plug socket and socket wrench. You'll need to use the socket extension to reach the plug down in the plug well.
  • 6 Carefully thread the new spark plug and tighten it. Hold onto the end of the socket extension with your fingers and start the threading process "by hand." It's easy to cross-thread the spark plug, so be careful. Once you have it started, you can tighten it down with a socket wrench. The rest of the installation is the reverse of removal.

    Removal & Installation
    2.7L Engines
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
    3. Drain the cooling system.
    4. Remove or disconnect the following:
      NOTE Place shop rags in the openings to prevent debris from entering the engine.
      Negative battery cable Accessory drive belts Crankshaft damper Intake plenum, lower intake manifold and exhaust manifold Valve and timing chain covers Coolant connections for the cylinder heads
    5. Rotate the crankshaft until the crankshaft timing mark aligns with the timing mark on the oil pump.
      WARNING Be sure the head bolts 9-11 are removed before attempting to remove the cylinder head, the head and/or block may be damaged.
      Primary timing chain Camshaft bearing caps, gradually, in the reverse order of the tightening sequence Camshafts Cylinder head bolts in reverse order of installation starting with bolts 11-9, then 8-1 Cylinder head(s)

    1. Thoroughly clean and dry the mating surfaces of the head and block. Check the cylinder head for cracks, damage or engine coolant leakage. Remove scale, sealing compound and carbon. Clean the oil passages thoroughly.
    2. Place a new head gasket on the cylinder block over the locating dowels.
    3. Inspect the cylinder head bolts for necking (stretching) by holding a straightedge against the threads of each bolt. If all of the threads are not contacting the straightedge, the bolt should be replaced. New head bolts are recommended.
      WARNING Due to the cylinder head bolt torque method used, it is imperative that the bolt threads be inspected for necking (stretching) prior to installation. If the threads are necked down, the bolt should be replaced. Failure to do so may result in parts failure or damage.
    4. Lubricate the bolt threads with clean engine oil, then install them.
    5. Torque the head bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration, utilizing the following steps and tightening values:
      1. Step 1: bolts 1 through 8: 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
      2. Step 2: bolts 1 through 8: 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
      3. Step 3: bolts 1 through 8: 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
      4. Step 4: bolts 1 through 8: plus 90 degree turn using a torque angle meter.
      5. Step 5: bolts 9 through 11: 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).

    6. Install or connect the following:
      Camshafts, timing chain and sprockets Water connections to the cylinder head Valve and timing chain covers Crankshaft damper and torque the center bolt to 125 ft. lbs. (170 Nm) Lower intake manifold and intake plenum Exhaust manifolds Accessory drive belts Negative battery cable
    7. Fill the cooling system to the proper level.
    8. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
