I have a 1989 chev s10 4.3 that will not crank unless i put gas in the carb. once I do that you can drive as long as you want to until you cut it off then you must do the same thing..what in the world

When i turn my key the pump is not priming. I can pour gas in my carb and it will crank right up. It will stay running until i turn the key off, then must pour gas in the carb again to get it to crank. I have changed the relay and fuel pump. I can not figure out what is going on. someone please help

There is a problem with the fuel pump relay's wiring: What turns it on to prime the line to the injector is the computer signal to the coil side of the relay. This should happen when key is turned to on, about a 2 second signal from the computer. Then, when the engine is cranking, the computer should also signal the relay, keeping the pump on till running. After engine is running, the pump is kept on by the oil pressure switch.
Depending on how the wiring is set up for the relay, the computer will either send a signal to the coil side of relay, and coil side then goes to ground, OR computer may ground the coil side of relay, causing it to energize, and send power to the pump. Check for the computer signal to the relay. The power feed is there for the pump or else it would not be running. Something is wrong with the coil side wiring for the relay.

I know that you want a simple answer but, have you done any troble shooting steps at the pump its self? when the relay is in does it pump at all? what is your lin pressure?

SOURCE: will start when you put gas in carb but will not run (has new pump and filter)

Check all the wire connection on the throttle body, the throttle position sensor may not be sending the proper signals to the ECM which controls the fuel injector. Here is a link to retrieving the DTC codes which i hope can help you get your serra running again.

strip and clean carb sounds like the float is stuck or the needle valve is corroded and stuck,or the gauze filter in the carb inlet pipe has a spiders nest in it

you will have to check the choke setting to make sure its set properly, also check the accelerator pump as the diaphragm maybe weak and need replacing. it may need a carb rebuild. check the fuel pump for pumping the proper fuel pressure.

This is a model which should get a good attention on all of its parts. You should have a detailed idea on your car's parts, its condition, workability,etc.
So firstly try to figure out any kind of leakages from crank parts, gear/clutch assembly. This is easy to find when the car is parked for long time.
Then look out for any broken pipes, tubes, seals, cracks.
Any oil leakage into combustion chamber, plugs, etc.
Check plugs by touching the car body while cranking!!
Then check the distributor cables and the distributor.
I think this all about your Power lines, fuel pumps.

Car runs fine in park and cuts off in drive

Don't know cars - but it might not be idling fast enough to make the gear change. Idle reset needed maybe?

1989 fleetwood bounder isnt getting fuel to the carb

pull the fuel line off at the carb crank the engine see if fuel comes out could use a little more info does it have an electric fuel pump most of them do its a long way from the tank to the carb if it has electric fuel pump it is near the fuel tank there should be a big fuel filter in line also fuel will not work until oil pressure comes up a bit check for cracked fuel lines like i said need a little mor info

It sounds like your torque converter clutch is sticking. This is a common problem with these transmissions. With a car this old, we usually just unplug the converter clutch solenoid (plug on front of tranny). The tranny will no longer lock up at speed and will get a little less gas mileage, but the cost to fix the tranny is pretty high in comparison. If you don't think this is the cause or you have other questions, please let me know.

Car will not start or stay running

Put a fuel pump in. Remove right front tire to get to it. Be sure it has fuel in the tank and not a faulty gage .

Engine will crank but will not turn over

Do this, take the top off the carb, being careful not to damage the gasket. Then take some carb cleaner and clean out the bowl and floats. Remove the needle valve and clean it out. Put it all back together and filling the bowl with carb cleaner. Start it with the starting fluid. Once you run the carb cleaner through it, it should start to run on it's own. Whatever you do don't shut it off for about 20-30 min unless you have to.
