I am not 100% but this should be a good place to start and it will cost you nothing. You need to get under the car. You will see that there is a thin long shaft that is theaded on the end. It should have a rubber gromet at the connector. I believe that your gromet is worn out or perhaps you need to simple adjust the threaded end to be tight as your shifter is traveling to far. I am not an expert, but I have been all over my 960 for the past 261K miles and 10 years of ownership.

check for broken motor mounts. if it is a rear wheel/4 wheel drive, check your u-joints in your driveshaft. if the aforementioned is good, check the fluid level and condition in your transmission. last resort, if rear/4 wheel drive: check your rearend fluid level and condition.
