Try spraying it with PB Blaster let it sit for 30 minutes it should come loose then work it in and out so you dont brake it .

normally you can take a 1/2inch breaker bar and insert it in the hole on the tensioner pull down and take the belt off the alternator and also try autozone.com to see if they have your car listed for diagrams pictures and step by step instructions if your car is not listed then try your local library they have all the car manuals and even copy them for you

The serpentine belt tensioner / pulley is on the front of the engine, and part of the belt 'routing'.

Its job is to put tension on the belt as it drives the other devices like the power steering pump, water pump, air conditioning compressor.

It is an aluminum casting that mounts with a single bolt to the engine. The pulley is attached to the arm.

There are a few ways to move / pry the arm inwards, thus releasing the tension on the belt for removing/installing: grab on the pulley bolt (15mm?) with a wrench, or some later models have an opening for a 3/8th socket wrench to attach to directly without a socket.

I have not seen this vehicle but, the center bolt or nut that holds the tensioner to the block is backed off two turns first.
Then the adustment bolt (most are accesed from under the vehicle) can be adjusted to give enough slack to install the new belt.
If this is still too tight, remove one of the two or two of the three bolts that mount the Alternator to allow for another 1/8" and install the belt.
Then remount the Alternator.
Then readjust the tension bolt.
Finish with the bolt or nut that mounts the tensionor to the block.

You are only supposed to losen then. Here are some good instruction with layout that might be of help:

REMOVAL:

  1. Loosen the pivot bolt and adjusting lock bolt. Torque: Pivot bolt: 38 foot pounds. Adjusting lock bolt: 13 foot pounds.
  2. Loosen the drive belt tension by adjusting bolt and remove the drive belt

INSTALLATION:

  1. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.

To remove the P/S belt, remove the right fender apron. Then loosen the pivot and adjusting bolts, swing the P/S pump towards the engine and remove the P/S belt.

There are 3 belts on the truck. The belt that goes around the alternator is not spinning. What could cause this belt not to turn?


Assuming that the belt is not broken ... you need to tighten the belt. This one is not as easy as the other two which have tensioners. This belt is tensioned by the alternator itself. I've found adjusting it to not be a lot of fun ... the tricky part is loosening the bolt that the alternator pivots on. There isn't a lot of room and I find one of the small palm ratchets to be helpful. So to tighten, you'd loosen the upper bolt that actually holds the tension on the belt, loosen the bolt that the alternator pivots on, re-tension the belt (using something to pry on the alternator if necessary) and tighten the two bolts again. If you have to replace the belt you'll need to remove the outer two to get to this one. The outer two tensioners are adjusted by loosening the bolt that holds the tensioner pulley in place and then turning the tensioner bolt itself to tighten or loosen the belt(s)... then retighten the bolt holding the pulley.

replace the tensior and tesioner pulley.

did you remove the belt before you tried to loosen the bolt? when you say main pulley, do you mean the pulley on the tensioner? by tensioner belt bolt do you mean the bolt secureing the pulley to the tensioner arm?

I have a 1991 dodge colt vista 2.0 l engine, and need to know where to get info on replacing ( how to or what to do ) the alternator belt. thanks


There is a curved bracket that the alternator is bolted to. This allows you to adjust the belt tension. Loosen this bolt and locate the other bolt that mounts the alternator to your engine. Loosen this one, as well. Now swing your alternator in the direction that will allow you to free the belt and remove it. Put the new belt on and swing the alternator to get good tension on the belt. Tighten both of the bolts on the alternator, but leave them loose enough that you can still adjust the belt's tension. Now use a bar to pry the alternator in the direction that will increase the tension on the belt a little bit and tighten the bolt on the curved bracket with your free hand. Now, tighten the other bolt. Start the car and verify that the belt has decent tension and does not slip (this will cause premature wear, squealing and bad charging). If everything is good, you should be all set. If it is too tight or too loose, you will need to readjust the tension of the belt.

loosen tentioner pully belt... using a 14 mm wrench, release tension on the belt by loosening the 14mm bolt. when loose enough, remove belt.. then install NEW belt.. adjust tension on new belt then tighten 14mm bolt on tensioner pully... you're done.

HOW HARD IS IT TO REMOVE AN ALTERNATOR


Yes, very easy...here is the steps to do it:

To Remove:
  1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  2. Remove air cleaner inlet pipe.
  3. Disconnect alternator electrical connections.
  4. Loosen (but do not remove) pivot bolt and tensioner mounting bolt.
  5. Remove drive belt form alternator pulley.
  6. Remove tensioner mounting bolt and belt tensioner.
  7. Remove pivot bolt, loosen adjusting bracket bolt and rotate bracket up.
  8. Remove alternator.

To Install:

  1. Place alternator on engine.
  2. Install (but do not tighten) pivot bolt.
  3. Rotate bracket down on top of alternator.
  4. Install belt tensioner and install bolt loosely.
  5. Install drive belt on alternator pulley.
  6. Tighten tensioner bolt to 14-19 ft lb (19-26 Nm).
  7. Tighten pivot bolt and bracket bolt to 28-38 ft lb (38-51 Nm).
  8. Connect alternator electrical connections.
  9. Install air cleaner inlet pipe.
  10. Connect battery negative cable.

loosen the the two bolts (show on the figure above) first
loosen also the bolt used for adjusting tension.
remove the old worn-out belt.
place the new belt (you may need to loosen further the tension adjusting bolt)
when belt is properly place, tighten it enough the tension adjusting bolt,
(not too tight, but not too loose) press the belt to ensure its not too loose!
When belt tightness is enough, tighten the the other lower one of the two bolt then the lastly tighten the pivot bolt.
