Question about 2008 Pontiac G6

1 Answer

Starting problems with 2008 G6. Car tries to turn over. May take 2 or 3 or 6 tries before it starts. There is a click I can hear under the dash as I turn the key on. After starting, the car runs rough for about 10 minutes. The monitor they put on says there is a misfire. The check engine light comes on, but may or may not go off.

SOURCE: Aztek won't start, key locked in ignition, service engine light on

It is the security chips in the keys. Has this car been wrecked? Was this car made in Mexico? GM had the bright Idea of creating a security system that would do exactly this, I know on cars made in Mexico (like the HHR) You can reset the power and get the key back out, but vehicle will have to be reprogrammed with the master key. This involves turning the key from off to run position without ever going past run (i.e. start position) leave key in this position for 30 minutes. Turn key back to off for 30 seconds then back to run for 30 minutes. repeat this step three times. the last time, after 3rd 30 minute period, turn key off for 30 seconds and then try to crank. Please note this only works if the original master key is being used. You can then reprogram the second key following a similar sequence, only master key that is working has to be inserted to let alarm system know that vehicle is not being stolen only that you are trying to reprogram a key. If original master key is not being used then vehicle has to be taken to the GM dealership to program keys and possible key module replacement.

SOURCE: running rough, no power misfiring

i had that problem once. when i got under half a tank of gas in the tank. What i did was i dumped one bottle of gas line deicer in the tank and i have never had it agian. you may have some water in the tank. from condasation or i have a stong feeling i got my water from the gas station. i was using the same station all the time. so i tryed another gas station and so far no more rough idleing which was caused by the water i think and i am getting better fuel milage to. i hope this helps.

SOURCE: 1998 bonneville. turn key on and you can hear the fuel

Hello! You're symptoms sound very much like a common problem associated with the fuel pump resistor. The 3.8L Series II engine has a two speed fuel pump. There are two relays that control the fuel pump via the PCM module. The fuel pump relay and fuel pump hi-speed relay. Tied into the hi-speed relay is a fuel pump resistor that may go bad.

Symptoms vary but primarily the engine will start but die in a matter of seconds due to insufficient fuel pressure.

Here is a picture of the relay (this is the picture for a Grand Prix, but the box is the same for your vehicle) - which is located in the fuse box in the engine compartment:

What you can do to both diagnose this and either narrow it down to this or disqualify it as the culprit is remove relay #15, and bend out the tab labeled "85", and then reinstall the relay. If this does solve your problem, then you need to replace the fuel pump resistor, you can find it here. Doing this will bypass the resistor, and place the fuel pump in "high" speed mode at all times. Once you have replaced the resistor, you need to bend the tab back to its normal position and replace the relay.
NOTE: while this may be a helpful diagnosis tool, and provide a temporary fix - doing this procedure for a prolonged period of time can lead to fuel pump failure. Use this at your own risk.

When I try to start my 2008 Pontiac G6 the only sound is a sort of clicking and then three messages come up on the info radio display. The messages are: "Service traction" "Service...

The clicking you are hearing is the starter solenoid attempting to engage your flywheel of the engine. So you do have some battery life and your battery cables aren't totally bad. So now we need to try to determine what the problem is.

First, try to jump start the car. If that works and the car starts. IMMEDIATELY, take it to an auto parts store and ask them to test your battery and alternator. Replace whichever one is bad.

If it doesn't start, then it is either your starting circuit or the engine. So you need to take off your serpentine belt and try to turn the engine (in neutral or out of gear) by hand (actually with a large socket wrench). If it turns, then you have either a bad starter solenoid or a bad starter - replace them! If you can't turn the engine by hand then the problem is internal to the engine and something is locking your flywheel.

The other warning messages are not uncommon if you attempt to start your vehicle and it doesn't start.
