Vacuum leak. If your jeep has an ECG valve from the exhaust to the intake manifold you could be pulling an vacuum leak. Get a small propane torch and open the valve moving it around the engine compartment as you listen to the idle. When it accelerates and revs a little higher, you have found your vacuum leak.

If you haven't changed the plugs or had the fuel system cleaned, now would be a good time to do it. The number 1 culprit for rough idles is dirty injectors or plugs. You can try an injector cleaner in a can (or bottle) for under $10 and see if it helps, and then work from there. If there isn't any improvement then if you are able to, check the plugs for any gunky buildup and if you find a bad plug, make sure you replace them all (or have them replaced) at the same time.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems.

Rough idle, staling, backfiring


You are going to need to do some testing to find this...first thing I'd look at is to check for any intake or vacuum line leaks, then check map sensor and tps. I can only offer a good guess, as I too would need to do testing before offering anything better. You can get test info in most inexpensive manuals.

Throttle body just replaced; now runs & idles rough


adjust the TPS, throttle position sensor.

First though, disconnect battery for 1/2 hour. Restart engine and drive for 15 miles while computer relearns changes you made. Will run rough for this period.

2005 jeep grand cherokee limited 5.7 hemi vehicles hesitates


The egr valve is located on the front of the right cylinder head. It has a tube attached to it and going to the intake manifold.It has failed and is why your jeep is running rough and hesitating. Replace it and it will fix your driveabllity issues. Disconnect the battery for 2 min to clear the code.

Idles rough with engine


1. idles didn’t adjust right.
2. check the timing
3. check your fire order
4. check your distributor cap. Maybe it is leaking
