SOURCE: Where is the thermostat located?

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Place a drain pan under the radiator drain and drain the cooling system to just below the thermostat level. Close the drain.
  3. Remove the upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing, then remove the housing.
  4. Remove the thermostat and discard the gasket. 0900c15280042100.jpgThermostat installation detail—3.0L engine 0900c15280042101.jpgThermostat installation detail—3.3L and 3.8L engines
To install:
  1. Clean the housing mating surfaces.
  2. Dip the new gasket in clean water and place it on the water box surface.
  3. Center the thermostat on the gasket, in the water box. 0900c15280042102.jpgRemove the radiator hose from the waterneck by loosening the hose clamp . . . 0900c15280042103.jpg. . . then loosen and remove the waterneck housing retaining bolts
  4. Make certain the bolt threads are clean. Threaded bolt holes exposed to coolant are subject to corrosion and should be cleaned with a small wire brush or correct size thread-cutting tap. Install the housing, making sure the thermostat is still in the recess, and tighten the retaining bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm) for 3.0L engine or to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) for 3.3L and 3.8L engines. Reconnect the upper radiator hose and tighten the hose clamp.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6. Fill and bleed the engine cooling system with a clean 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol antifreeze and water. 0900c15280042104.jpgLift the waterneck housing off of the lower intake manifold, then . . . 0900c15280042105.jpg. . . remove the thermostat out of its mounting flange
  7. Make sure the radiator is full and start the vehicle

How do I change my thermostat? 93 Dodge Grand Caravan SE

IT'S ON THE END OF THE TOP RADIATOR HOSE WHERE IT CONNECTS TO THE ENGINE. SHOULD BE 2-3 BOLTS GET NEW THERMOSTAT FIRST SHOULD COME W/GASKET. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO POSITION OF OLD THERMOSTAT SO YOU DON'T PUT NEW ONE IN UPSIDE DOWN.
GOOD LUCK

I have a 1997 dodge grand caravan with a 3.8L I replaced the radiator cooling fan relay switch and fuses but when idling for more than 5 mins. the van starts overheating

Water pump impeller could be bad or thermostat is stuck shut. I would change thermostat first, easy to change, cost under $10.00 Water pump is hard to change in this van, you have to remove right tire, then inside wheel well, then loosen 3 top motor mount bolts which will lower engine so you can get to water pump and tensioner.

My 2002 Dodge Caravan seems to be a bit sluggish, then all of a sudden the temp gauge shoots up and it's hot. We just replaced the water pump and thermostat.

check the coolant temperature sensor. the sensor is located right next to the thermostat housing. it has only two wires, disconnect plug. using a ohmeter check the resistance between the two terminals on top of the sensor when cold. resistance should be 7,000-- 13,000 ohms. check again when the engine has wormed up to about 200 degrees. the resistance should be 700--1,000 ohms. if there is not a definite change in the resistance, then remove and test in a pan of hot water. if the test is good, check the wiring harness from the sensor to the pcm.

I can't find the thermostat on my 2001 Dodge Caravan. Can someone help?

Hello jhenry246, my name is JShreader. Thank you for choosing fixya.com

The Thermostat is located behind the Thermostat Housing on almost all Vehicles. There are 3 different Engine types they used in this Caravan this particular year. I have uploaded you pictures showing the locations of the Thermostat and Housings for each Engine in .pdf format. You can download them by clicking HERE. The engine cooling thermostats are a wax pellet driven, reverse poppet choke type. If you follow the Upper Radiator Hose up to the side of the Engine, it connects to the Thermostat Housing.

You must drain the Cooling System before you remove it. I went ahead and made you up the replacement procedures for replacing this Thermostat. You can download it by clicking HERE.

I hope this helps you. If you have any more questions or need any more diagrams, please don't hesitate to ask...Thanks again, JShreader!
