Yup it can in the distributor you have a white plastic coil .very common for these to just die. you have to pull the distributor to change . when you begin make sure number 1 cylinder is at top dead center . it makes it easie to put everything back together . your rotor will point to the number 1 cylinder on reassmebly then set timing ........ You have turned it over with a spark wire off right to see if it sparkes. do this first !

SOURCE: My 99 GMC sonoma wont start..

ok... there are a couple of things you can do. i must have miss typed on the cap, rotor . in the back of the motor where the plug wires conect that is the cap that is bolted to the distributor with two torques bits that i believe are t15 in size. there may lie your problem. the posts inside are made of aluminum and they get coroded and dont alow the proper spark. the other commen problem is the exhaust the catalitic converter becomes pluged up. something you can try is remove one of the oxigen sensors and try to start it up if it runs the cat needs replaced. the o2 sensor is a 7/8 nut to remove it. give it a try

SOURCE: I have a 1997 Gmc Sierra 5.7 4x4. It has no spark.

It could be the CPS, but as you now know throwing parts at a repair is costly and sometimes it does not fix anything. A code scanner should be able to tell you if the sensor is bad. If the CPS goes bad you will have no spark.

Sounds like you need a fuel pump. There is an access panel in the floor of the car to get to the pump.

I have a 2005 GMC Sierra that stalls and stutters

You should be able to buy one for around $60 at a auto parts store and recommend using one. However he next time the truck wont start, turn the switch to the on position and listen for the humm of the pump energizing. If you hear nothing, check the pump relay by swapping it with another. Often times the relay next to it will be the same type. If the relay is good, the pump will most likely need to be replaced. If you hear the pump energize but it still wont start, put on a pair of safety glasses and go to the schrader valve on the fuel rail. Depress it to see if fuel will squirt out of it with pressure behind it. If comes out with very little pressure the pump or fuel pressure regulator could be bad. If it comes out with higher pressure it still doesn't rule out the pump because some vehicles required a exact amount of pressure to start. For instance, if your vehicle calls for 35 psi and your pumps output is 29 psi it may not start. If after trying everything I said and it still doesnt start, you may want to get the fuel gauge to eleminate this possibility or have your ignition coil tested.

Try remove the six screws that holds the coilpack on the right side of the engine, often corrosion makes grounding fail here and can make the engine die on you for no apparent reason, it might be worth a try

Not enough info, but check the fuel system recall they had for a number of years. Also check the fuel filter & pressure.

My truck 99 ford ranger died while driving down the road

fuel filter usually dont cause it to die and not start back, thay usually cause rough running. see if your fuel pump is running by getting in and roll up all windows so as quite as possible then cycle the key from off to run and lisen for the pump to run for 2 to 3 seconds should be a faint buzz sound if no sound is heard then replace the fuel pump relay, if no help probably going to need fuel pump
