Gas smell coming from heater vents

When my 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse is at normal operating temp. a gas smell starts to come through the heating vents. What does this problem sound like and what could be a solution? I have heard it can be a leaky injector, leaky hose, or an exhaust leak.. HELP!! -Nick

You need to have the engine checked for small fuel leaks, do not drive this!

If it makes a loud exhaust sound when cold its an exhaust leak. most likely the steel fuel line is leaking. check to make sure your air filter is clean.

SOURCE: Bad smell coming from heater/ smoke coming out vents

I had the same problem in my 98 Dodge Dakota! Replaced the heater core, problem solved. No more funky coolant smell and erie fog coming through my vents. I bought the heater core at rockauto.com online. Have purchased many items now from them. All factory parts so far at half the price of even AutoZone, even with the shipping. Also, you usually have to wait only a couple of days depending on the part and they have EVERYTHING.

No heat but blows cold air

Not if the engine is getting up to normal temp. Could be low on coolant or a problem with the heater core or a blend door under the dash.

Well car shows its hot but kicks out cold air maybe 30 minutes driving or sometimes immediately have heat prob just occurred 24 days ago

if temp guage is normal but no heat in cab your heater rad may be blocked or the control flaps not directing the hot air properly ,,, older cars had a heater tap that controlled the hot water flow into the heater radiator ,,,,

Overheating with normal temp on gauge

The heater core would not cause you needing a quart or two of coolant to fill it up. And the water pump would not affect this either.
Something is blocking the system, it could be something in the radiator or something in one of the hoses.
You might try taking the top hose off and filling the engine with the radiator blocked off. Or fill the radiator with the engine blocked.

Put antifreeze in car and now smoke pours out of heater vents.and overheats

This sounds like a blown heater core or heater hose. If you smell antifreeze and/or see a puddle under the car or on the floorboard, you would most likely have a heater core gone. This can be a time consuming repair due to the fact that the core will normally have to come out under the dash area towards the floor.

Coolant vapors coming through vents

Sounds to me like a leaking heater core, probably just started. Quite an extensive operation to replace. If you happen to be in a cold climate, the windows will undoubtedly fog up. Hope this helps
