Recirculation (EGR) valve codes. The Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensors on these vehicles have a high failure rate. Ford now uses a redesigned DPFE sensor. In effect, since the failure rate is so high, if you get this code, replace the sensor and retest. When the DPFE Sensor starts failing, it gives the PCM bad information. The DPFE Sensor is less sensitive, and the PCM thinks less recirculated gas is being burned than is actually so. Trying to compensate, the PCM opens up the actuator too much. This excessive amount of EGR combined with the air coming in via the throttle body leans out the fuel mixture, causing a lean misfire, which is the "stumble" or "hesitation" that is common as the DPFE Sensor fails. The DPFE sensor in the Focus is not very robust, requiring frequent (every 30k miles or sometimes less) replacement or a work around. Note that complete DPFE sensor failure is a very slow process, and the check engine light won't come on until the DPFE sensor is pretty much done for. If you're experencing stumble or hesitation while cruising, and think that it might be related to DPFE sensor failure. If the stumble goes away, then your DPFE sensor is more than likely failing. Of course, replacement of the bad DPFE sensor is the official recommended fix for this problem.

Hello! That DTC indicates a fault in the EGR temperature sensor. It is located on the intake side of the engine, between cylinders 3 & 4. See picture below. You should check for any loose connection, damaged connection or damaged wires. If none, it will need to be replaced.

did you do the pin point testes? a fault code only tell s the sensor signal has a problem, that can be the actual sensor or the connector, or the wiring or the powertrain control module, with this sesor you can also hook the hoses up wrong and excessive exhaust back pressure can cause this as well.

Check for

vacuum leaks on intake manifold,

the air tube between the air filter.

intake manifold vacuum hose.

clean throttle plate with Berryman carburator cleaner

Also remove carbon built up behind the EGR valve and the EGR passage tube.

Vacuum leak WILL offset the intended 14.7 to 1 air fuel ratio.

More un-metered air (leaks) will lean out the fuel mixture.

Use small amount of Berryman carb clearer at potential air leak area will help you identify trouble spot.

At idle,just spray and listen for the RPM surge.

The in-rush of carb clearer will increase the RPM on the motor.

Record the problem spot(s) and address it later.

EGR carbon built up require 2+ hours to clean from start to finish.

You will need a new EGR base gasket before your start.

Locate and remove the EGR valve after the vehicle is cool down.

Carefully record the connector and vacuum line (for older vehicle) location by drawing an easily to follow diagram.

Remove the EGR valve.

Inspect the location of the carbon built-up inside the valve and the EGR passage tube.

SOAK these areas with WD-40 spary.

You will need a small screwdriver,cloth hanger and lot of newspaper and time to get this cleaning done right.

RE-SOAK the carbon and let it sit for over-night will also help.

One the last round,pass a shop vacuum of the EGR valve and the passage pipe.

Install the new EGR gasket and connectors.

Allow the vehicle to warm up outdoor to burn up any remaining WD-40.


Take it for a test drive.

Code 1401 is for a problem with the EGR temp sensor. The sensor and circuits would need to be checked.

Hi Abe, I'm glad to help!

P1401 is an EGR fault code: Differential Pressure Feedback EGR Circuit High Input. This can be caused by several things. EGR Valve is bad, Flow through the valve is restricted due to carbon build-up. Electrical connector OR wiring is damaged somewhere. Check the wiring and the connector at the EGR valve if no damage is found then replace the EGR valve and clean the port holes in the engine and the EGR tube that's running to the valve "IF IT HAS ONE". Clear the codes and drive it and see what happens. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Abe.

OBD2 fault codes have no cut and dry fix for every car that has it in memory. Here is the general info on the code. This code refers to the EGR valve back pressure sensor called the "DPFE" sensor
P1401 - DPFE Circuit High Input
Symptoms - Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light) Possible causes
  • DPF EGR circuit open.
  • VREF short to PWR.
  • Damaged DPF EGR sensor.
  • DPFEGR circuit short to PWR.
  • SIG RTN circuit open.
  • Damaged PCM.
  • Possible solution A DPF EGR PID reading greater than 4.5 volts with the key ON and engine OFF or running indicates a hard fault.

    Orange engine light on and off at random. have 2 codes saying P1401 & P1237. Any idea what the codes mean?


    No, but check engine light mean emissions control system
    fault. Have Honda deal with it because the have the proper
    diagnostic equipment and parts to correct the problem. I
    wouldn't use after market parts.

    P1401 code set, was told to replace the front pre cat / manifold assembly did but code still setting.


    After replacing the front pre cat/manifold assembly, if a new gasket was used on the flange where the precat mates to the exhaust pipe, make sure the bolts are tight and reset the engine codes with a scanner at a parts store. If the engine light comes on again with the same code you may have a faulty oxygen sensor.

    p1402 - dm-tl air pump motor is shorted or disconnected.

    2000 model year accent is equipped with a new enhanced evaporative emission system. this new system is capable of measuring leaks as small as 0.020" diameter. the new system pressurizesthe evaporative emission system with a diagnostic module for tank leakage (dm-tl), while the previous model's system appliedengine vacuum through the purge valve to detect system leaks.

    vehicles that have the check engine light illuminated and have dtc p1401, p1402 and p1403 stored in the ecm should have their electrical systems diagnosed related to the appropriate dtc. these codes are not related in any way to an evaporative emission system leak. the conditions that set the diagnostic codes areas follows:
    p1401 - dm-tl air pump motor current draw is higher or lower than expected (normal = 17-36 ma).
    p1402 - dm-tl air pump motor is shorted or disconnected.
    p1403 - dm-tl changeover valve is shorted or disconnected
