SOURCE: 2002 chevy blazer fuel pump (4 door)

yes you have to drop the tank. you will also need a fuel line tool to unhook the fuel lines. before you drop the tank see if tou can reach and wiggle the electrical connection on the top of the tank. these pumps have a pigtail issue. please rate

SOURCE: i am trying to remove my fuel tank from a 96 chevy suburban and replace the fuel pump

ok i'm going to guess that you have a gasoline engine with a side tank like in a pickup truck. if you have a diesel let me know, things might be a little different. here's the step by step for a gas side tank. before you start, disconnect the battery negative cable.
1. drain the fuel from the tank (they don't tell you how, just get as much out as you can)
2.raise and safely support vehicle (get it high enough that you can get under it to work on it)
3.loosen the fuel neck hose at fuel neck and disconnect filler neck from tank
4.support tank and remove tank support straps and insulator strips
5.remove frame mounted bracket
6.lower fuel tank shield
7.lower fuel tank enough to gain access to fuel and electrical connections
8.disconnect fuel feed and vapor hoses
9.disconnect electrical connectors
10.remove fuel sender assembly and seal ring
now to install new tank
1.install NEW seal ring and install sender
2.raise tank enough to connect fuel feed /vapor hoses and electrical connector
3.raise tank fully
4.install fuel tank shield
5.connect fuel tank filler neck and tighten clamp
CAUTION tighten fuel strap fasteners in steps, alternating between straps, until proper torque is reached. failure to properly follow this step can cause bottom of tank to deform. fuel gauge may read improper level if this occurs
6.install fuel tank brackets and insulator strips
torque nuts to 115 in-lbs
7.install fuel tank filler cap
8.connect battery negative cable
9.turn ignition switch off and on and check for leaks
it's pretty much the same for rear tank, just different location, may have off-road shield in back and torque spec is 47 ft-lbs, not 115 in-lbs. you still have to alternate when you torque straps or you risk deforming tank. hope that helps

SOURCE: fuel pump wiring diagram for 1998 chevy express

Well if theres power going to the relay but not out, then you need a new relay. If theres power in and out of the relay, you might need a new fuel pump. The electric fuel pumps inside the tank are actually lubricated by the fuel as it pumps it, and if it runs dry long enough, it can burn out the pump

SOURCE: i put new fuel pump

Remove the fuel pump and check if there is any fault on the motor or the connections. check on the outside and then fit it back. If the tapping activates the pump then there are faulty connections, check positive and ground, check the fittings and also finally the fuel tank for residue or dirt,

SOURCE: new fuel pump 96 chevy wont start unless i bang on

The only solution is to remove the sending unit again,I have run into a problem in northen vehicles where the top of the unt where the hoses connect is rusty and corroded,Also if you only changed the pump you could have a cracked hose to the feed line in the tank,Your 5 pin connector at the top of the tank could be pulled out also check that first.Ramundoo

1998 dakota stopped running. Crank, no start. Fired with starting fluid.

I think banging on the tank and it starting is conclusive enough to take a closer look at the wiring connections and if they seem OK, to take a look in the tank.

Our 2001 grand am won't start...we think it may be the fuel pump but when we bang on the gas tank it will start but runs for a bit and cuts out we put a used pump in it over the summer

fuel pumps can be nasty things but befor i payed out the cash for a new one i would check my ground wire on top of the gastank if its loose it can sputter, fail to work all together, had a chevy blazer that did that it would start when i banged on it cause it made the ground connect then after a lil bit it would stop, keep in mind this is real rare but happens with gm products check the crank shaft possition sensor as if it goes bad the fuel pump wont pump fuel the computer doesnt know to turn it on, those will come and go as well has a very simular appearance to a bad fuel pump, this sensor is located behind the pully on the front of the engine its the one at the bottom in center sadly got to remove that to get to it but shouldnt be to hard

Not getting fuel to engine

i would start by getting somebody to cycle the key on and off while you listen to hear if the fuel pump is turning on or not. (when the key is turned on the fuel pump will turn on and you should hear it start up and then turn off.) if you can hear the fuel pump come on then i would check to see if the fuel filter is plugged. if you cannot hear the fuel pump you should check your fuses. if all the fuses are good then get a rubber mallot and bang on the bottom of the gas tank. the vibrations usually will get a fuel pump to start up again and your car should start up.(if it fires up after banging on the gas tank, you will need to replace the fuel pump. the banging on the gas tank only works a couple of times. enough to get you home or to a shop to replace.)

I BOUGHT A 99 CHEVY VENTURE IT WANT START,SOMEONE TOLD ME TO BANG ON THE FUEL TANK AND TRY IT I DID AND IT STARTED AN RAN FOR 5 MINUTES WHATS THE PROBLEM

fuel pump. Chevy fuel pumps have a tendency to freeze up, banging on the tank frees it up momentarily, but once it freezes the first time the damage is done and the pump needs to be replaced. if you buy a pump and a Haynes manual at your local parts store and DIY you could probably save about 50% of your bill if you'd taken it to a shop. It's not a hard fix.

Fuel pump stopped

its probally not the relay but it is in the large fuse box under the hood , a rectangular grey or black plastic block. try banging the fuel tank 3 or 4 times fairly hard then try to start the truck. repeat this a couple of times if you truck starts then its the fuel pump its self. chevy s are known for there fuel pumps

If I have less than 1/4 tank of gas my yukon won't start.

I had the same problem. I had a few different mechanics tell me that the fuel pump is starting to go out when it does that. The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank, and the gasoline keeps the pump cool and lubricated. When the fuel tank is less than a 1/4 full, the pump is not submerged anymore, and can have trouble sending gas to the engine. My emergency fix was to get underneath the car on the driver's side and bang on the gas tank about three times. It will start up, and will run great unless you turn your engine off. But eventually you're going to need a new fuel pump. Once I replaced it, the problem went away.
