SOURCE: 03 silverado turn the key to start but starter will not engage

Interesting problem, on the starter is a "trigger" wire that originates from the ignition (may run to the power distribution center). When the truck is started 12 volts runs down that wire and activates the solinoid on the starter. Put a 12 volt test light on the trigger wire by the starter, have someone hit the key to start, test light should come on, if not chase wire back and look for a break in the wire or replace trigger wire.

SOURCE: 1997 chevy 4.3 1500 will not start.

If all cables and battery check out....make sure you have a good ground. If that is all good you need to check if you are getting battery voltage down to the solenoid with the key in the start position. If not most likely it's the ignition switch...if voltage is ok check connections at starter and again make sure ground is good. You should see battery voltage at the solenoid when the key is in the start position....at the battery cable and the smaller wire on the solenoid. If all checks out and still no-start...you need a starter.

Battery seems good but starter wont engage?

I'm not sure concerning your question, however if the starter spins when you try to start, then the engagement dog on the starter has gone out, if the starter does not spin you have a bad connection from the switch to the starter or the battery connection to the starter is not tight or corroded and not making a good connection, and on some cars like fords you may have a starter relay which will be near the bat., if it's a chevy the relay will be in the engine bay fuse box and it has a fuse there also it is behind the relay. Good luck orvil

1987 dakota, will not crank over, battery, starter fine, whats wrong?

If automatic could possibly be safety engage on shifter; or if automatic could be the safety switch on clutch. On auto try to rock vehicle and reengage shifter. Standard check clutch switch.

The starter seems to be engaging, even without the key in. I just replaced the starter with a new one about a month ago. I disconnected the battery to stop it. if I try to reconnect the battery it sparks...

Try the starter solenoid, the contacts may be welded in it. I am not sure if the Ford Ranger has a starter relay also in the fuse box. If the starter solenoid is good then it could be the starter relay has contacts welded. Please rate my answer so I am rewarded points for it.

1987 Bronco Starter

ok you have a solonoid on the fender that controlls the starter
there is a small wire that signal the relay to close that puts power to your starter.
you need a test light to see when that wire is hot.
and then we can go from there
