SOURCE: where is the fuel pump

There are three. One in the tank, one under the car on the left side, and the very high pressure one that drives the injectors in the engine bay.

SOURCE: bmw 5 series when down to quarter tank fuel system taking in air

Generally this Is due to a weak or faulty fuel pump, the more fuel in the tank the easier it is for the pump to run, if checking your fuel pressure and it shows good, do a flow check of the fuel if it has lots of air and bubbles vs straight fuel coming out of tester gauge then it's the pump for sure..

Bmw 330d ...black smoke when idleing

Valve stem oil seal is worn. It doesn't smoke when injector disconnected because no compression as cylinder not firing with no fuel.

Starting problem

Try turning your key on and off 3 times before you start the car, if the engine starts more quickly it means your fuel delivery system is not holding pressure and when you stop your car the gas at the engine runs back to the tank. You might also see if the engine will start immediately if you turn it off then restart right away compared to starts in the morning.
