Question about 1995 Honda Accord

1 Answer

I bought this car over a month ago and havent had any problems. well i replaced my VSS (speed sensor) the other day because my speedometer wasnt working. After replacing my car started having issues. The car will not accelerate over 30 mph now or going uphill. I cannot figure this out. The vss i bought was a new part. I think it somehow triggered something to go wrong. The car still starts and drives normally for a few minutes and then starts to act up. Please help this is my only vehicle. Is there anything that the vss could affect to cause the car to do this??

SOURCE: My 1995 Honda Accord V-6 speedometer sticks at 19 mph.

The speedometer works from a steel sheathed cable that is connected to the drive shat at the rear of the gearbox. The internal braided steel cable rotates inside the sheath connecting the drive shaft to the back of the speedometer. The cable sheath connects to the gearbox casing and the internal cable has a lug that engages with a rotating shaft in the gearbox. The cable connects in a similar way to the back of the speedometer. Your problem is likely to be associated with the cable. It can have become disconnected at either end or, more likely, the internal cable has broken.

Its easy to check out. Find where the cable come through the firewall between the passenger compartment and the engine compartment then follow it down to where it connects to the gearbox. Disconnect it and see if it is broken. Alternatively you can find where it connects to the back of the speedometer and disconnect it there. If it is broken the internal cable will come out of the sheath.

Replacing the cable is easy enough but requires some scrambling around under the dash.

SOURCE: Honda Accord EX 94 vss has been replaced, but still nothing work

If all the connection and power supplies to instrument cluster are ok,I suspect that the speedometer or instrument cluster is faulty but before you replace it, make sure the gear inside the transmission that drives the VSS is in good.

I have a 2001 chevy venture I changed the vss sensor like 3 time it will work for a few days then I'll start acting up again and the speedometer will stop working how can I fix it?

Do you have any other problems with the vehicle ? Transmission shifting problems , fluctuating idle etc... The vehicle speed sensor does not control the speedometer directly , it is an input to the PCM/ECM - engine computer .
Speedometer
The IPC displays vehicle speed as determined by the PCM. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM. The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) discrete signal is pulled up to ignition voltage in the PCM. The IPC uses the VSS data received from the PCM and a software program to determine the proper vehicle speed to display.
To tell what is happening a factory scan tool needs to be hooked up to check serial data communications between the PCM an instrument cluster . Also could be a bad stepper motor for speedometer , GM had faulty ones back in that year.

Faulty speedometer

Hi there:
This is a common problem on Mazda, it is usually caused by a faulty vehicle speed sensor. I would take a look at the wiring and connector to the vehicle speed sensor. If the wiring and connector look to be in good condition, replace the vehicle speed sensor. The sensor is on the transmission near the cv axle. It is held in by one bolt.
VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION Disconnect the negative battery cable.Disconnect the VSS connector.

Remove the VSS.Apply ATF to a new O-ring and install it on a new VSS.Install the VSS. Tightening torque7.9 - 10.7 Nm (80 - 110 kgf.cm, 69.5 - 95.4 inch lbs.) Connect the VSS connector.Connect the negative battery cable.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

My check engie light came on then about a week or so later my speedometer stopped working on my 2000 ford ecsort

The Vehicle Speed Sensor is what tells the Speedometer how fast you are going. Have your check engine light scanned for the code that is set. Replace the Vehicle Speed Sensor if necessary.

Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
Removal
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.
  3. Unclip the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) wire clip from the VSS bracket.
  4. Remove the VSS retaining bolt.
  5. Remove the VSS.
Installation
  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Speedometer wont work

Most cars have one main vehicle speed sensor (vss). The VSS in front wheel drive cars is mounted in the transmission. A gear in the tranny turns a small gear on the VSS. If a tooth of the gear on the VSS is damaged, you can get that erratic speedometer jumping like you're experiencing. A malfunctioning VSS can cause problems with shifting and with the activation of the anti-lock braking system and cruise control. Have a Transmission shop inspect your VSS and replace if necessary, if your handy with tools. you can buy the VSS and replace you self. The speed sensors on the Galant are called pulse generators and need to be replace as a set. Located outside of the transmission right on top.
Good luck!

My odometer is registering extra miles

Check/Replace the vehicle speed sensor (VSS).

VSS generate a pulse count to the vehicle computer. If this sensor send out extra count the speedometer will read higher also.

Use GoogleMap to plan a short trip. Reset the speedometer and see what's the mileage count.

does your cruise control work? If not, check the wiring from the VSS to the speedo cluster. Check VSS connector closely for pin pudhout or corrosion

Sometimes, the VSS siganl is converted by the instrument cluster and sent to the PCM and speedo.

Check engine light on?

Speedometer
The electronic speedometer (17255) receives a speed signal from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (9E731). This sensor is also used to sense vehicle speed for the engine management system and to regulate the cruise control when equipped.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vehicle Speed Sensor The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) (Figure 53) is a variable reluctance or Hall-effect type sensor that generates a waveform with a frequency that is proportional to the speed of the vehicle. If the vehicle is moving at a relatively low velocity, the sensor produces a signal with a low frequency. As the vehicle velocity increases, the sensor generates a signal with a higher frequency. The PCM uses the frequency signal generated by the VSS (and other inputs) to control such parameters as fuel injection, ignition control, transmission/transaxle shift scheduling and torque converter clutch scheduling.

first of all, the power steering pump doesn't stop working and then start working usually they are just bad. second of all it shouldn't take 3 hrs to change speed sensor, and last the vss could cause all symptoms, if the car has variable assist steering the speed sensor could effect this

I have a 1994 Honda Accord LX sedan and the speedometer just stopped working. My mechanic just put in a transmission that he bought from a junk yard. How do i fix this problem?

I have a 99 accord and my speedometer and odometer did not work. The problem was the VSS vehicle speed sensor. The VSS is located on the transmission. Once I replaced it everything worked fine.
