1997 Malibu DTC P1652

Have had long time problem w/fans not coming on in my 97 Malibu 3.1 v6. Followed suggestions here, relays tested good, motors good...decided to bypass w/switch to run fan manually..it works, but keeps setting P1652...Wired switch into lead wire of fan2, power direct from battery..What GETS me? If the PCM is SMART enough to catch the change in voltage in this circuit, WHY CANT IT KNOW ENGINE IS TOO HOT & TURN ON THE DARN FANS?!?! I love my car, but this is getting ridiculous!! Note: DID find strange problem w/fuse/relay center BEFORE installing switch...Fan MODE relay 'socket' has 5 pins..polarity is reversed in 2 or more pins...not sure HOW the heck THIS realistically COULD happen? Any suggestions?

Hi.....

The Normal Temperature Range to the Fan Start is: A/C ON 181 F.
A/C OFF 199 F. When the Engine Reach this Temperature the Fan should start.

OK. Do this simple test.
1---- Start the engine, Desconnect the ECT Switch located on the Radiator,
See if the Fan come ON. If yes, if not go to step #2
Connect the ECT SWITCH and leave the car Running and with a Temperature gage.
See the temperature, if the Temperature go more than 199 F.
Turn the Engine OFF.
Disconnect the ECT sensor and check for Ground at the WHITE/BLACK wire.
If ground exist, Replace the ECT switch.
But if not. Check the wire for any damaged, and the ground at the Front Left Fender.
Repair as need.

2---- check the Fuse link RDI FAN . 30 amp.
Check the Fuse link CDS FAN 30 amp.
Replace if need.
And Return to step # 1.
Check the Radiator fan Relay, Rad fan relay 2 and 3. Replace if need.

Ok. I hope this help on your question.
I can give to you the WIRING DIAGRAM of the Fans, But I need a E-MAIL adress to do that.

SOURCE: cooling fan relay 1998 neon

on the left(driver's) side of the lower rad support. It's a small flat relay with a plug on the bottom and usually has a blue colored front. held on by two screws. Also, there may be more rad fan relays in the underhood fuse/relay box.

Yes, it's probably the PCM. I had the same problem, and upon replacing the PCM it started working again. If your cooling sending unit is new, and so many parts of your fan assembly are new, it's probably not receiving the signal from the sending unit. Hope this helps.

Cooling fans won't come on in my 97 Chevy malibu


The PCM controls that activation of the cooling fans. I uses three relays to do this. The configuration of the relays is such that failure of any one of them should not result in total fan failure (one or both would still operate). Try this - with the engine running, turn on the A/C. If the fans work, then your problem is that the coolant temp sensor is not telling the PCM the coolant temperature properly. If they still don't work, then, although it doesn't seem likely, I would have the COOLING FAN RELAY, COOLING FAN RELAY 1, and MODE CONTROL RELAY checked. Reason being that the only other possibilities are the PCM and the circuit wiring itself.

it should be the cooling fan relay not fuse. check to see if fan motor is good . run test wires from battery to fan motor to see if it works. if it works its probably the relay

Radiator fans do not work on my 1997 chevy malibu


There is a sensor on the top of the engine which turns the fans on. it is usually located near the thermostat housing but dont confuse it with the temperature sensor which can easily be tested in the same means by watching the temperature gauge as you ground it out. it may take several seconds to indicate it on your sensors.
If you by-pass and hook the fans up direct without an in-line fuse and there is resistance in the line from a bad fan motor you will melt the wires and the fan motor itself. Use a 30 or 40 amp fuse inline and put on a switch if you like but don't hook direct but only for a few seconds or so to see if is working well. Use very thick wire like booster cable wire.

Take the lead off the sensor and contact it to the ground on the engine. If the fans start up with car running even cold then replace this sensor.
If not check relay by switching with same numbered relays typical in most vehicles. Mark the original relay and note it's position, take pics if you like to aid in placement.

Trouble code P1652 means: Cooling Fan 2 Relay Control Circuit Malfunction

I would start by checking power supply to the cooling fans,making sure the coolant system is full,& using a scn tool to verify the proper operation of the cooling fan system.Here is some info to help you.

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls the operation of the cooling fans. This is accomplished by providing a ground path for the cooling fan relay coils within the PCM. The relay contacts will close and complete the circuit between the fusible link at the battery junction block and the fan motors. Whenever there is a fan ON request both fans will be running.

Power for the fan motors is supplied through a fusible link at the battery junction block. Battery positive voltage is applied to the cooling fan relay contacts and coils. The cooling fan relays are energized when current flows through the relay coils to ground at the PCM. The cooling fan relay #1 control circuit is used for low speed cooling fan operation. The cooling fan relay #1 control circuit and the cooling fan relay #2 and #3 control circuit are both grounded for high speed fan operation. The cooling fan relay control circuits are monitored by the PCM. Before using the Electric Cooling Fans diagnostic tables be sure to perform the Powertrain On-Board Diagnostic System Check. If diagnostic trouble codes P1651 or P1652 are present, use the appropriate DTC diagnostic tables prior to performing Electric Cooling Fans diagnostics.

Important:
When certain Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are present, the PCM may command the cooling fans to run all the time. It is important to perform the Powertrain On-Board Diagnostic System check prior to diagnosing the engine cooling fans.The PCM will complete the ground path for cooling fan relay #1 under any of the following conditions:
- When engine coolant temperature exceeds 105°C (221°F)
- When A/C is requested and ambient temperature is greater than 10°C (50°F)
- When A/C refrigerant pressure is greater than 190 psi (2 volts)

For high speed cooling fans operation, the PCM will delay control of the cooling fan #2 and #3 relays for 6 seconds. The 6 second delay ensures that the cooling fan electrical load will not exceed the capacity of the system. The PCM will complete the ground paths for cooling fan relays #1, #2, and #3 under any of the following conditions:
- When engine coolant temperature exceeds 113°C (235°F)
- When A/C refrigerant pressure is greater than 275 psi (2.9 volts)

If a problem that involves the low speed cooling fan relay control circuit (cooling fan relay #1 control) exists, DTC P1651 should set. If the problem affects the high speed cooling fan relay control circuit (cooling fan relay #2 and #3 control), DTC P1652 should set. A problem with the ECT sensor should set DTC P0117, P0118, P1114, or P1115. Any of these DTCs will affect cooling fan operation and should be diagnosed before using the Electric Cooling Fan Diagnosis table. The Electric Cooling Fan Diagnosis table should be used to diagnose the PCM controlled cooling fans only if no DTC is set.

97 Malibu cranks but wont start Theft light is not on. If you keep trying (15 to 20 min)eventually it will run as long as the RPMs stay above 1000. Fuel pump won't come on unless I jump across the relay,...


What is the correct year ? Above your post it says 2005 Chevrolet Malibu but your post shows 1997 ????? An what size engine ? 3.1 or 3.4 or 2.4 L I would also say your crankshaft position sensor could be bad , but that's just a guess ! Without testing that's all anyone on here can do , guess . Videos on youtube showing how to test crank sensor !

Plus you state that you ohm check ground connections , sorry but that's not the way to check . You do voltage drop testing ? Suggest you watch this . The Trainer 47 What measuring voltage on the ground side means

Change starter on 97 chev malibu


Check and load test battery. If good, use a volt meter across both terminals.. when.cranking, volts should not drop below 9.5. If it does, replace starter. No valid starter test can be done unless battery has been proven to be good.
