Question about 2004 Chevrolet Impala

I have a 2004 chevy impala that overheat when I turn on the heater fan. A/c fan doesn't cause this problem. Have replaced thermostat, put in new antifreeze and replaced radiator cap. doesnt seem to be leaking antifreeze. any suggestions to what problem is?

You may have an air pocket in the engine block. Make sure it is bleed properly. Also, some water pump impellers have been known to breakdown, made of plastic. A head gasket leak can also appear to be a boiling over condition.

the best thing to get is the Haynes manual for your car at advanced auto or autozone or somewhere like that and the book will tell you how to take everything apart and put it back. i think the manual is about $16.00

Have someone take a look at your lower intake manifold. I had the same problem and found out there was a leak there and had to replace the gasket, which is very common for this vehicle.

sounds like head gasket, shes putting pressure out into your rad, check your big hose when idling see if they swell up with pressure,another way to check is to leave rad cap loose.

I have this code PO480 on my chevy impala 2001, and its over heating plus the engin light on


Does your fun run when the AC is turned on?. Check your FanCont2" and "FanCont3" fuses in the fuse compartment, if these are open, that will cause the code to pop, if either one burned, replace and reset computer with scanner. However you seem to have an actual issue, possibly with the fan motor, make sure your fan is running, also you could possibly have a semi closed stuck thermostat, remove it, then put it in a metal container with water, put it on the stove to heat up, once the water heats up the thermostat should open all the way, if it doesn't then replace it, either way, by testing it, you rule out that possible issue...

Hello and welcome to FixYa! If you have overheating problem, it can lead to multipleissues. You may be running on low coolant that's why the vehicle overheats. Ifthat's the case, please add coolant and make sure that it sits on the rightlevel, too much coolant can cause overheating too for coolant will overflow. The vehicle may have a faulty or worn out radiator blowermotor that's why it overheats. If that's the case then you will need a blowermotor replacement to resolve the issue. If the radiator is clogged with dirt and rusts this issueoccurs too. The coolant doesn't flow normally on the cooling system if it'sclogged. If that's the case, I strongly suggest that you have the radiatorflushed to drain out dirt and rusts. If you think that the radiator served youenough then it's better to have it replaced. Please do check the radiator hoses, If you have worn outhoses it can cause coolant leakage which can result to overheating. A tiny holeis good enough for the vehicle to overheat. A faulty thermostat sensor can cause the issue too. If youhave worn out thermostat, the fan may not trigger that's why the fan won't workwhen under stressed conditions. A blown radiator blower fuse can cause thisissue too so I suggest that you check the radiator blower fuse and replace itwhen necessary. What causes the radiator blower fan fuse to blow? It's becauseof a failing radiator blower motor, If that's the case have the radiator blowerfan motor replaced. If the fluid in radiator doesn't circulate then it meansthat you have a blown head gasket or a faulty water pump. I suggest that you gofor the water pump replacement first specially if you think that it's near theend of it's service life. Would the heater control valve malfunctioning make the engine overheat blowing hot air out the heater one moment,then not blowing the hot air, temp gage spikes 225 plus. The motor takes awhile to heat up...


Heater control valve malfunction will not cause engine to overheat unless coolant is leaking externally...Overheating going down the road can be the result of a few different things...Partly clogged radiator...Insufficient air flow due to possible fan problem...External coolant leak...Make sure fans are operting properly and have cooling system pressure tested for leaks...Gaining and losing heat on the inside of the vehicle usually means system is low on coolant but you must find out where coolant is going

2004 Chevy Impala no heat. Fan OK. Engine warms up in normal time. 1 heater hose hot other one is not. Adjusting the heater control doesn't do anything. What controls the flow of water through the heater...


Your heater core is clogged. You can fix it. Disconnect the two heater hoses and put one into a bucket. Use an air compressor to blow into the other - it'll flush the contents into the bucket. Then reverse it - put the hose you blew into, in the bucket, and blow into the one that was in the bucket. This way, whichever side of the core had the clog, you can blow it out. Reconnect the heater hoses, and then burp the system or you can end up with air bubbles in the cooling system that can cause you to overheat. No heat is often a symptom of low coolant, usually followed by overheat. There are other controls that regulate heater, but right now, re-fill the cooling system with engine running and heater on high, then check for leaks (coolant you lost went somewhere...you need to determine where) Low coolant will damage your engine. Take care of that first, then if heater still does not work, then do diagnosis on that. (if you loose the engine heat won't matter, will it!)
