I have a 1983 ford f250 with 6.9 diesel engine. The previous owner told me that the front fuel tank did not work; he said that he was running the truck on the front tank once and that the truck started missing and running rough like it was out of fuel. He said he swapped to the rear tank and never had the front tank looked at for repair. I had my diesel guy look at the tank and he said everything checked out fine and that it was out of fuel. He put about five gallons of diesel in it and let it run for about 30 minutes and that the truck ran great. This truck has been a great running truck until one day I was getting hay for my cattle and the was running the truck on the front tank and it started missing and stalled out like it was out of fuel. I swapped to the rear tank and the truck started but would only run for about a minute and die again. I bleed the air out of it and changed the fuel filter and the truck started and ran great for a few days. Now the truck is hard to start and when it is running it blows out a lot of white smoke that smells like burnt diesel. Once the truck is started it runs great but is very hard to start. I put new glow plugs in, new glow plug controller and new glow plug solenoid but it still will not start unless I plug in the block heater. If the block heater is plugged in it will start up very easy. Please help before I go crazy trying to figure this out of my boss (THE WIFE) makes me sell it. She already calls the truck the money pit.

Shes not far wronghere ,you sure this is right a nearly 7 litre diesel engine ?? we use engine this size to pull 44 tons and here is one in a small pick up truck,anyway boss or is that the mrs? ha ha i got rid of mine sent her to live back in the uk with herdaughter ,instant baby sitter/minder brilliant well my money pit is a 1994 jagaur 4 litre auto but enough said their now as for this one then without my head under the hood or bonnet as i call it and please remember colour is spelt colour not color ,i suspect that their is something seriously wrong here and my first suspect without having a good look and sniffing its backside ---is the valve guide seals are worn and its drawing in oil down the valve guides ,the hard starting ? need to think a bit more here as if the block warmer is left in it starts then it could be a bit low on compression which could be the rings or the valve seats .If you was just around the corner i would have a look for free but iam in spain escaping the rising religious torment from the burka brigade like the rest of us brits who are now queing up to escape to europe ,then try to smuggle ourselves back into the Uk and claim political assylum and get the social handouts denied to a native englishman .No with this one i must agree with the bosswoman here its obviously worn out and you would be better off with nice citreon berlingo or a VW caddy all motors diesel with manual gearbox but keep away from the renaults though as these are good mechanicly but the electronics?? No in aqll honesty here i do feel that even without looking at this vehicle i think its worn out and its going to cost a few shekels to put right to say the least so as and when you get the goverment buy back against a new vehicle then trade it in iam sorry i cannot be more helpfull here but as the old saying goes a picture is worth a thousand words .

SOURCE: put new glow plugs in ran fine for 1 day now it wont start..

You may want to surf around on some of the powerstroke forums for detailed answers, but I know the powerstrokes use oil pressure to control the injectors so you may have some problems with the high pressure oil pump.
Again, it is just a guess. I just wanted to point you to some of the Ford Powerstroke forums which may be of much more help for you.

Check to see if your spark plug wires are not cracked or worn. They would make the engine run rough when cold or damp more often then when the engine drys up when warmed up- just an easy thing to check...

SOURCE: 91 F150 runs rough at low idle

If you put a scanner on it and you have no misfire codes I would be looking at either an egr valve stuck open a little or a bad Idle Air Control Valve

if this is a diesel engine the problem will be that the injector return line is in the from tank and the tanks are not equalizing out. When running 2 tanks it is best to have a balance line between the bottoms of the tanks so that fuel can flow where it is required.

have you looked into the injectors, or injector balance? glow plugs just preheat the cylinders before you start turning the engine over. if the injectors are dumping too much fuel it will run rich and blow black smoke, lean it will dump white smoke, same as if it has an internal coolant leak, but smell different. Ford has had problems with EGR systems on some of their diesels, being an older truck how many miles is on it? and the front fuel tank could have a bad fuel pump, pretty common for them to do what you have described. Also might want to have the timing looked at on it! It ignites off of pressure, and if the timing is off it will adversely affect the ignition of the fuel which will make for hard starts, and poor running. there is a lot that needs to be looked at to figure this one out! could be quite a few different things. My girlfriend filled my tank with diesel and now the car will not start or run. Obviously. What would be the easiest way to fix this problem? I have a 2007 ford five hundred.


Remove as much diesel fuel as possible from the gas tank and refill it with gasoline. You may have to crank the car to purge the diesel fuel out of the fuel lines. After that, it should start and run okay. There should be no damage to the engine from the diesel fuel.

Fill it up with the highest octane fuel, use gas treatment and fuel injection system cleaner, and drive the diesel out of the system. The car will not like it, the engine may knock and stutter and generally not want to cooperate. After a few tanks of good gas and gas treatment and engine cleaner you may consider replacing the fuel filter. If this solution worked, it would be the cheapest.

The "MOST EFFECTIVE
" way is to REMOVE The FUEL TANK and DRAIN it By Tipping it over to Pour From FUEL INLET HOSE. Im Sure you Dont want to Here this as it Requires Much WORK . , BUT It IS The MOST EFFECTIVE Way to EMPTY The TANK.

Ford fusion 1.4 tdci will not start unless the hand pump is used


HAVE YOU CHECKED THE FUEL LINES WHERE THE FUEL PRIMING PUMP IS CONNECTED FOR ANY CHAFFING THEY ARE COMMON FOR CHAFFING BESIDE THE FUEL FILTER WHICH WOULD EXPLAIN WHY FUEL IS RETURNING TO FUEL TANK.

Looking for a fuel system diagram for a 1983 6.2 diesel where can I find one


fuel flow is from tank to seperator filter then to supply pump on block now under presure to the secondary filter on the engine in the valley from there to the injection pump fuel not injected leaves the injector pump through the check valve at the top front of the pump entering the return lines withe the lines from all the returns on the injectors back to the tank. Yes the primary filter is on the **** side and should not be opened while running or cranking. hope this helps. Jim

the fuel tank is underneath just in front of rear tyres,fuel filter besideit on a petrol,on a diesel the filter is under bonnet right hand side of engine
