SOURCE: Brake warning light stays on

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, two possibilities:

  • the handbrake switch is shorted or the wires leading to it; and/or
  • the sensor switch in the brake fluid reservoir is defective or the wires/connectors leading to it.
Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

located on the floor of the vehicle behind the brake pedal.

SOURCE: the handbrake light in my toyota corolla efi 1987

there may be two canisters.. one could be for your clutch for example, if they say on the cap 'only use dot 3 or 4 brake fluid etc... then dont be afraid to top them up.. the clutch is mostlikely smaller and the brake may be an oval shape split into 2 different sections and i would be mounted onto the brake booster which is a big ufo shaped thing, you reali cant miss it, if the light is still on you will have to get the mechanic to adjust the handbrake because it may not be fully releasing

My break light keeps coming on

You are low on brake fluid, the handbrake is engaged, or the switch on the handbrake needs to be looked at. If it is the ABS light, there is a problem with the ABS system. The brakes will still work fine, you'll just have regular brakes with no ABS.

Hand brake light on dash of my 1983 FJ40 will not turn off

Hi. Look at the brake master cylinder. See if the brake fluid is low. If there is a wire and a connector on the side of the reservoir, this is the 'fluid-height sensor' when the fluid is low (as the brakes wear, the fluid level drops proportionally), the fluid level is below the sensor, and creates a circuit, thusly illuminating the light.

The Brake light usually also warns of low brake fluid in your brake master reservoir. Have you checked the level?
