Does a car run cooler without a thermostat?

No don't because when it closes it gives time for the coolant in the radiator to cool, and when the thermostat opens it would allow the cooled water to come into the block pulling down the temp. If you take it out your warm up time in cooler weather will cause you to run rich for a longer time before car warms up messing up your mileage too. Maybe better to just replace it, it may be going bad.

1. If your coolant temperature is high your engine will overheat and you may have a faulty thermostat . However overheating may also be caused by other issues such as a failed water pump, blockages in the cooling system, a compression leak into the cooling system and other issues.

2. When the engine is fully cold open the hood and locate the top radiator hose running between the top of the radiator and the engine. Start the car and then feel the top hose. It should stay cool for a short time while the coolant gets to operating temperature and then the thermostat will open. When it opens the hot coolant from the engine will flow through the top hose into the radiator and you should feel the hose warm up very fast. This is an indication that the thermostat is operating normally but it is still possible that it is stuck partly open (when it should be fully open) and is impeding the flow of hot coolant from the engine. In that event it would need to be changed.

If you start the engine and you almost immediately feel hot coolant running through the top radiator hose the thermostat may not be closing at all and may be stuck fully open or partly open. It would then need to be changed. If stuck fully open the engine will run too cold some of the time and inefficiently, especially if the outside air temperature is very cold. But if a thermo is stuck fully closed or partially closed this will cause the engine to overheat and engine damage will result.

If anything, it might be stuck partially open. If it were stuck fully closed, the car would really overheat, like boiling hot. You might try taking the radiator cap off when it is cooled down enough, and start the car and wait till it has reached normal operating temperature, so the thermostat should be fully open. Now momentarily squeeze the upper radiator hose together as tight as you can, trying to stop the flow. Look into the radiator and see if you notice a surge of coolant when you let the hose go. If the thermostat is open you should feel the coolant surge when you let your hand go of the hose, and see the coolant coming into the radiator. Just kind of a rough test. If you aren't sure, a new thermostat is always a good idea.

I have a 2005 gmc jimmy, the engine light is on and i hooked up my code reader and it says Coolant Temp Below Thermostat Regulating Temp. What does this mean and how do i fix it?

your thermostat is designed to open at a specific temp, for example a 195 thermostat is supposed to start opening at 195 but will not fully open until it reached about 210. Your ECM has determined that your thermostat is not 'closed', but is hung open, not allowing the engine to reach a temp that the computer is set to see. So the thermostat is either malfunctioning, or your temperature sender unit is reporting the wrong thing to the ECU. Probably a good time to replace the thermostat, if the condition persists, replace the sender unit-both items together will cost less than $30 total.

The best way to test it is to remove the thermostat, and then boil some water in a pot, drop the thermostat into the water and watch how well the thermostat responds. It should open up to the full open position very quickly and if it is slow or lagging to open up, or it does not open fully then replace the thermostat.

The car keeps overheating and the coolant and water level are fine. i dont know what else it could be

Thermostat could be stuck closed - put your hand on the hoses (after the engine has been running a bit) and check if one is cold. If one is cool to the touch - the water pump has failed - or the thermostat is failed (stuck) shut (supposed to fail open).

Radiator fans inoperable - check the fuse and relay.

Head gasket failure - would need to be checked via piston pressure check.

The water temp (coolant temp) is cold all the time? Thermostat stuck open. Replace, not good for car. Computer can't adjust well to that and will cause fuel economy issues, never allow car to warm up properly. Opposite of thermostat stuck shut causing overheating. If the water can't be restricted enought to heat up and then be maintained at the correct temperature your car is not operating efficiently, won't pass smog I'd assume, etc. Thermostat is at end of upper radiator hose in thermostat housing. Two bolts to remove. Pop out thermostat and see if its stuck open. It'll have a gap if it is and it will be shut if not. You can boil water vigorously and hang your thermostat in it with a wire or something and watch it. It should move open from closed at a noticeable rate. When removed after fully opening, it will close as it cools. If it doesn't move and is stuck or moves EXTREMELY slowly it's done. Replace gasket, replace thermostat, light coat of sealant on gasket if you wish and torque down evenly. Replace lost coolant. Hope this helps.

1999 Ford Taurus, no heat. Air comes thru all vents but blows cold air like the ac is on. Replaced thermostat twice, flushed heater core twice, still ice cold air. Help?

Try checking the two pipes that go into and come out of the heater matrix, is one of them hot? if it is there is an air lock within the matrix, Also is the thermostat opening fully? Sorry i know you said you have changed it twice already but take it out check settings when it should open and close, then boil some water and test the thermostat

Are you putting the thermostat in correctly? It it will not work backwards.

And to confirm that there isn't a different problem, take the thermostat out all together and see if it overheats.

Engine not fully warming up is not usually caused by the thermostat. Stats usually fail closed, not open.

You will want to check the water temperature sending unit or gauge after verify the water temperature with an external calibrated thermometer. You can attach and insulate the external thermometer to the housing where thermostat is located.
