Hello mhak330: My name is Roger and I can give you the answer to your question. Locate the ECM on the drivers side of the engine.look for the bottom bolt holding the ECM. you need to do basics first,
check to see if bulbs are good,then verify no voltage at bulbs,
check to see if your truck has has a tailor hitch and wiring installed.
where they connect to your original wire is where you need to check first,

It will be a lot easier to do with the bed removed. It will also save time. So unfortunately yes that is true.
