Are you sure you are getting fuel? If so next in line is verify spark. First are sure you are even getting energy down your plug wires? You can use a timing light for a quick check. But best way is to pull a plug to make sure. Careful! If you have spark during crank, you may still have a fuel issue. I would also check timing.

SOURCE: Car won't start and floods

Locate your vehicle's computer connector (ALDL), most are on the lower driver's side. In some vehicles you might need to look around a little, on the passenger's side, and around the center console under a plastic cover. For more information, check your owner's manual. This device gathers information that was stored in your carsECM. This information ortrouble code can inform you the system or sensor that is malfunctioning. Look up the code in our diagnostic trouble code chart. After repairs have been made use the code scanner to clear trouble codes and recheck system. B. Testing Fuel Pressure. Test for proper fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge. Connect the gauge to the test port on the fuel rail. Fuel pressure reading's very depending on the system your in our vehicle, but most throttle body injection cars (TBI) are between 13 psi and 17 psi. and most (DPI) direct port injection systems are between 40 psi and 55 psi. To find out your vehicle system fuel pressure consult arepair manual. If little fuel pressure is present the fuel pump needs to be replaced.

C. Test for Weak Ignition Spark
. A weak ignition system can be a sign of a failing ignition component. Remove spark plug wire and insert an extra spark plug into end of wire, attach spark plug to engine ground then crank engine. You should observe blue spark between spark plug gap. If a yellow spark is observed, your ignition coil is weak and needs to be replaced. If your spark is not consistent you may need a ignition module.

D. Inspect the Main ECM Relay
. If the ECM relay fails it will shut down the engine management system. This relay carries high amperage and is prone to failure. To test install new relay then test drive to recheck symptoms.

E. Testing the Ignition Switch
. This test requires a electronic test light. When vehicle dies test the power side (+) of your ignition coil with the key on, the test light should illuminate. If your test light is not lighting suspect your ignition switch or ignition relay. To trouble shoot this condition you will needwiring schematic for your car.

Check the catalytic converters. Pull the O2 sensor between the engine an cat. If it runs. Replace the catalytic converter/s. Fuel filters can clog up, but they give signs as struggling to keep up at higher speeds. Has pressure, just no volume. The will go forever, say at 55 MPH, but try doing 60 MPH and the engine cuts out or stalls a bit.

gas engine, not diesel.
its probably flooding, ever give it a 60k mile tune up, ever?
we check spark tips for flooding and dry, never do we guess at fuel pumps, ever. (pressure gauge is $20)
tips dry or soaking wet.
we check for spark , no gas engine car runs with no spark
so we check all cylinders for good spark
if spark is good and flooding (new spark plugs) we use
cranking wide open throttle wot. like the operators guide says.
start now? this cuts all injection, this magic PCM trick.

see scotty ,
1: compresson at spec, 2: spark good and timed. and 3: fueling last.

skip the silly ad.
note he says 2, but he ASSUMES compression is good. (oops)
but his tests are fast, and if it fails to start, see #1 above. ask

Can a fuel pump on a land rover discovery not operate continuously?

Options:

1) Fuel pumps can often go out "slowly" meaning sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Eventually it will die and you will be no fuel to your engine.

2) It might be your fuel filter.

3) If you are getting fuel to the engine, it could be your spark plugs, plug wires, etc...

I have a landrover discovery that wont start, it has a new fuel pump andv is getting spark from the coil. any ideas?

The reason for the engine to start is relative of a correct TIMING setting with a correct valve settings and the fuel delivery.
So if your fuel pump was changed , I am sure it was calibrated, hence please check on the injectors or change them as it will be best to have this done with the new pump.
Now make sure that the plugs produce a good intensity spark, if not go back to check the triggers on the HT coils - check the trigger units- check the coils using a manual make and break, check the HT wires.
Now finally check the compression on all cylinders, check the timing of the spark . Make sure there is no overflow of fuel as this flooding will not allow the engine to fire.
The car must start.

Eengine wont start has gas and spark?

Does it sound like its spinning or turning faster than normal? If so could just be flooded. Try cranking engine with excellerator 3/4 way down at 10 sec intervals with 2 min brake in between. These cars have always seemed to flood easy. And the air intake system is so enclosed it cant really dry out easy. I try that 3-4 times if it does seem like its trying to start or getting better than Id say tow to mechanic. Possible coil problems too? But seen alot of them flood out.
