Wrong tranny.
the TCM shifts based in this , so
take both tranny to any tranny shop
and say make best out of 2, many can.
you could look in both FSM and see what parts need change out.
CASINGS.
the day of simple swaps are over...
electronic shifter trans are complex. and today even more so.
with ESP, and ETC. far worse........

you should have (sorry) joined Top Jeep forum.
then asked what works. before the leap,,, not much.

Check your transmission control relay, this would appear to be the fault in your system.

Where is the output shaft speed circuit?

30RH
AW4 trans.?

this a tranny question.
the a/t tranny?
well that is the rear tail sensor
the PCM tells you if it s bad, did you scan it.
the PCM will not lie about it.
but if it does show odd readings, take it out and clean the mag mud off the end, and win.
or
click

Transmission lock up

Not sure how many miles you have but it could be a weak tranny fluid pump or your torque converter is dying. It could also be a bad transmission filter.

Location of speed sensor 96 Jeep Cherokee

which one?
if the rear transmission, it just is a conn, and 1 screw.
a 96 -2006 sure.
42RE transmission or what? there are 2.
why not post the DTC error so we can be on the same page,?
page 191 covers it here , under tranny

some cars have up to 4 speed sensors, 2 on engine and 2 in tranny.
so... guessing page p191 tail
there is also a backup sensor for that. so.....
post DTC error and WIN, speed sensors means zero.
my guys is net rumor told you trans shifts bad and is VSS bad?
or did you scan it and see a live error, DTC,
that be best, not rumors, (and do clean it and retest )

Have 97 cherokee sport 4.0 has trouble startingt but

Vacuum you are seeing is about 13inches low. either something is causing the timing to stay retarded or the timing chain is stretched beyond it's limit. Id check the MAP and throttle position sensors as they have influence over timing (and fuel mixture) and check the chain for stretch. Since you had the distributor out, it is also possible that you have installed it one tooth off...that also can ****** the timing.
