Question about 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier
Iget the fan to work on 3and 4 but why don't it work on lower speeds
9 out of 10 times it's the blower motor resistor. Follow wires from fan to it... Only a few inches, held in by 2 7mm screws

you need a resister found under your air duct by the passenger floor under dash board auto zone sells these for about 25.00 you may as well buy cabin air filters while your at it . 1 of the screws will be a pain to install back into the duct work I left mine out didn,t make a difference . you might have to order it as they are a comman item oh you will need a vacuum to clean up mess from cabin air filters .this is not a hard job .

That is the blower resistor. 4 is wide open, so, no resistance. I had 4 of them put into my truck. The wires were burnt and shorted the others until the problem was found. Check the plug if you do this yourself.

this is caused by the blower resistor as you correctly diagnosed, but the new resistor is blown because the fan motor is drawing to much current and blowing the resistor back out, replace the blower motor and resistor again.

Common issue for many cars, Jeeps big time. Your "Blower Motor Resister" is defective. The reason for only 4 on the speed is the resistor controls the voltage going to the blower motor on the lower three speeds. This is a common problem, don't let anyone tell you it is the blower moter itself. The part should cost between $20-$40, depending on where purchased. The killer is getting it installed, some are easy to get at behind the glove box, others are up in the dashboard harder to get at. Chevy techs should be well aware of this, and be able to give you a good estimate of repair.
