There is what appears to be a water line in the mirror. it still reflects like it used to below the line but not above the line. And the non reflective part is growing.

Can a new glass be installed, or do I have to buy a whole new mirror?

  • jagornot Nov 20, 2013

Sometime an auto glass place can replace just the glass, sometimes available through a good parts store not a pep boys, like a real parts supplier that garages go to. If not, you my have to replace the assembly which. Could get expensive, try a salvage yard. Sometimes you can get one in the same color.

Radio freezes up then turns off and back on again some days it works fine other days not so well

I actually took a 06 Commander in last week with the same problem. We checked the windshield carefully, and then drivers door moldings and then blew out the drains for the sun roof.
It still leaked down through the drivers' side drain line area of the sun roof, around the window moulding, and dripped right in the vicintiy of the rear of the radio.
We finally found the problem by dropping the head liner down and using an inspection mirror with a flash light. We disconnected the drain line and plugged the nipple opening and poured a small amount of water into the sun roof pan and located a hole in the drain pan just above where the nipple is formed for the drivers' side sun roof drain line.
We could not see the actual leak source without the mirror and flashlight, as it was on the interior side seam facing away from the drivers' door opening.

Since carefully sealing the drain pan seam just a 1/4 above the drain hose nipple on the interior side, slightly above where the drain hose connects, the problem appears to be solved.

It appears to be a manufacturing defect in the plastic seam in my opinion. Could just be a faulty radio if your car doesn't have a sunroof, or a leaking windshield gasket.

Hello lindleyjl,

1. You will need to disconnect the wire cove from the upper mirror base. (See image below)
2. Use a flat blade screw driver to disconnect the electrical connector from the mirror. Number 1 in the image.
3. Use a torx driver to loosen the set screw that holds the mirror base to the windshield button.

4. Slide the mirror upward off the the rear view mirror button; number 1 in the image below.

To install, reverse the above outlined procedure.

I hope this helps.

Need to replace right side mirror with new unit. How to remove old unit?

you will need to remove the inner door panel to get to the nuts on the inside of the door panel to remove the mirror.if its just the mirror that is broken(reflective)then a glass place can replace the reflective part by gluing a new one onto the old housing.

Have to buy a new mirror or:

I was able to avoid buying a new mirror, but my mirror also became so foggy that it was unusable. This correction will not allow the Auto Dimm feature to work!!!!!!! But at least the mirror will function as a mirror. This took me about an 1 1/2 hours (glue needs to dry).

1) Take the mirror off the windshield
metal lever held mine in place
mirror then slides off
disconnect wires

2) Pull the mirror apart
it's glued together
Don't brake the plastic

3) Seperate front glass from the auto dim element
a clear front glass is sandwiched to the
element with a series (or piano style)
of metal clamps
the element is a reflective surface
the clear glass may brake, this is OK
it will not be reused, Be Careful Not
To Cut Yourself
Don't damage the reflective element, though

4) Clean the surface of the element
Be Careful Here, the element scratches
more easily than the glass surface would
have

5) Disconnect the 2 wire connector connected
to the element circuit
this is just a safety step to prevent the
element from trying to work and possibly
heating up

6) Put everything back together
glue the mirror back together
reconnect the mirror wiring if you
need to (my mirror had the compass
that needs power)
put it back on the windshield

I performed this repair about 6 months ago and have not had any problems. The element is the reflective surface that the mirror already used, so it reflects as it should. The auto dim feature, as stated before, does not work, but I didn't have to pay a couple hundred bucks for a new mirror or a used one that would eventually do the same thing. Their is a gap from the plastic edge of the mirror to the element the width of the clear glass that was removed. It is not noticeable to anyone but you.
