Question about 1997 Chevrolet Malibu
I went to inspection in NJ..they check for emissions..i passed them. Unfortunately i failed because the "check engine" light is on. the Inspection employee told me all i needed to do was replace the check engine light bulb...can you please tell me if this is an easy thing to do..or better phrased can a person with very little experience in car repair ( i have changed bulb in brake light on back of car, changed oil and replaced brake pads on my car...) is this something i might be able to do on my own..and if so can you please give me instructions...oh BTW i think i forgot to mention that i have a 1997 Chevy Malibu..thank you so much for any assistance you may be able to provide ;)
U dont need to replace bulb-its workn--that emplyoyee needs a test---the lite is tellin u there are some codes--go git a scan done at a partplace etc--mite b an 02 sensor or other-----some peopl hav takn the bulb out to cheat-but car wont run------try disconnectn batt n see if the lite clears-cud b just a glitch

the air bag system has its own diagnostic codes that can be read from a scanner, you have to go into the body section and look for srs restraint system

If you haven't done so already, have the cam and crank shaft position sensors checked, or replaced, You have replaced everything else.

It needs a code scanner hooked up to it,to tell you why the light is on and the cause. If there is an autozone near you take it there or
call different auto part stores to find out if they do that.Without getting the code, it's just guessing what the problem is.

you will need to drive about 50 miles till the computer checks the system since it was reset. Your check engine light may come back again, if it does run a vacum test..
