2003 rear right axle shaft broke would that stop my tranmistion from shifting back and forth?

Was driving the car other day smelled like oil was burning then heard a pop/shuve then tranmition wront shift back and forth towed home tire was bent in took out tire looks like my rear right axle shaft broke but would that be the reason i could not go forward or backwards in year if so how do i fix?????????

Having a broken axle shaft will let the diff spin freely, allowing the transmission to spin with no resistance. Resistance/pressure is what causes your transmission to shift. No resistance/pressure means no shifting.

hi from what your symptoms describe ? it may well be as simple as the actual link at the gearbox underneath where cable attaches has either come loose / the clevis pin has come out/ or cable outer sleeve clamp has loosened so instead of inner cable selecting the outer cable sleeve is moving back//forth or the obviouse theory you have snapped cable? if any of above? feel sure you can diy repair with a little patience the most important tool in any tool kit! best wishes

more than like have a broken axle shaft, un hook the rear drive shaft and put it in 4wd if it wont move then you know you got a broken axle shaft or spider gears broke in the pumpkin

I doubt they did anymore damage but i`ll bet that the engine was damaged from the training going out such as valve guides and seals and carbon build up on plugs ETC.

I had this same problem with my 1998 SL2 after about 170,000 miles. There is a plastic bushing at the end of the shifter cable that holds the cable to the shifter - it probably broke. Remove the center console inside the car to access the bottom of the shifter. I checked my local Saturn dealer to find the replacement cables (come as a set) are more than $200. So I went to Lowes and bought a beam clamp and a large washer to hold the cable to the shifter. It has been working fine for more than 28,000 miles and cost less than $3

1994 Land Rover Discovery Manual has a grinding and clunking noise from rear, right side


A grinding noise suggests a bearing at fault or perhaps worn pads on the brake rotor.

However, the clunking noise you mention could also point to a problem with the drive shaft or differential.

The first thing you should do is to get under the vehicle and try twisting the propshaft back and forth. If there's any movement this points towards a worn universal joint on the propshaft. A worn universal joint can cause a clunking noise - particularly when pulling away. The vibration caused by a worn universal joint can also damage bearings in the differential and also to the splined ends of the axle shaft.

You're also going to have to remove the wheel from where the noise comes from and examine the end of the axle shaft/bearing.

All a crankshaft does is transmit torque from the piston/rods to your transmission, which then tranmists torque to your axles, which then makes your wheels turn. If your crankshaft is broke, the engine will probably be locked up in a non-running state.

The Selectable Four Wheel Drive (S4WD) Front Axle consist of the following components:
• Differential Carrier Housing
• Differential Case Assembly
• Inner Axle Shaft
• Intermediate Shaft Bearing Assembly (located on the right side of the oil pan)
• Electric Motor Actuator
The front axle on Selectable Four Wheel Drive (S4WD) model vehicles uses a disconnect feature mounted on the right side of the oil pan in order to engage and disengage the front axle. When the driver engages the 4WD system, the Transfer Case Control Module sends a signal to the electric motor actuator to energize and extend the plunger inside. The extended plunger moves the clutch fork and clutch fork sleeve across from the clutch fork outer gear that is splined to the right side wheel drive shaft to the clutch fork inner gear that is splined to the inner axle shaft. The locking of the two gears allows the axle to operate in the same manner as a semi-floating rear axle. A propeller shaft connects the transfer case to the front axle. The differential carrier assembly uses a conventional ring and pinion gear set to transmit the driving force of the engine to the wheels. The open differential allows the wheels to turn at different rates of speed while the axle continues to transmit the driving force. This prevents tire scuffing when going around corners and premature wear on internal axle parts. The ring and pinion set and the differential are contained within the carrier. The axle identification number is located on top of the differential carrier assembly or on a label on the bottom of the right half of differential carrier assembly. The wheel drive shafts are completely flexible assemblies consisting of inner and outer constant velocity CV joints protected by thermoplastic boots and connected by a wheel drive shaft.

If you are saying the car won't move in drive or reverse, you probably broke one of the joints on the CV axle.

is it stick shift or auto box???
for stick shift check the clutch is working and the drive shafts are good
if the half shaft if snaped the prop shaft will turn but the car wont move!
if its an auto box check it is full of oil as well and then check the gear shift is working some times they just fall off,,,,,if the prop shaft is turning and the car wont move the fault is in the rear axle (drive shafts snaped)

I'd say yes. The differential fluid is often overlooked by oil change technicians, even though it's something that should be topped off periodically.

It probably would cost more than that to repair it once it wears out.
Axle Housing Assembly Removal & Installation To Remove:
  1. Lift the vehicle.
  2. Drain the lubricant from the rear axle housing.
  3. Remove the rear axle assembly from the vehicle.
  4. Remove the brake caliper brackets from the rear hubs.
  5. Remove the rear cover and gasket from the rear axle housing.
  6. Remove the rear axle shafts from the vehicle.
  7. Remove the rear differential assembly from the vehicle.
  8. Remove the brake backing plates from the rear hubs.
  9. Remove the rear drive pinion shaft yoke and seal from the drive pinion.
  10. Remove the drive pinion from the rear axle housing.
To Install:
  1. Install the drive pinion into the rear axle housing.
  2. Install the rear drive pinion shaft yoke and seal onto the drive pinion.
  3. Install the rear differential assembly into the vehicle.
  4. Adjust the differential side bearing preload and the backlash.
  5. Perform a gear tooth contact pattern check.
  6. Install the brake backing plates onto the rear hubs.
  7. Install the rear axle shafts into the vehicle.
  8. Install the rear cover and gasket onto the rear axle housing.
  9. Install the brake caliper brackets onto the rear hubs.
  10. Install the rear axle assembly into the vehicle.
  11. Refill the lubricant in the rear axle housing.
  12. Lower the vehicle.

I think that changing the fluid would take about an hour, and depending on the garage, and the labor rate, that they might elect to take the rear cover off of the differential, and drain it that way and replace the fluid once it was put back on. He could inspect the gears while the cover was off and tell you how bad it was.'

Do you hear any clunking or gear mesh noises from the rear when putting it in gear or running the vehicle?


Some mechanics would simply top off the fluid and wait until it wears out, which could be several thousand miles in the future.

Use gear oil for it of the recommended viscosity in the service manual.

Generally thicker than motor oil.

So, adding fluid would cost only the amount of the fluid plus some labor.
A bottle of fluid might cost $9.99 or so depending on where you get it.

You might be able to do this yourself if you crawl under there, remove the fill plug at the top, and just add gear oil. If there isn't enough room you might drive it up on some ramps and then crawl under there.

Removal of broken axel broke of by wheel


not a problem,
jack up your car and block it on side frames,you need to have room to work at rear pun-kin,get a pan for rear gear lube to drain in,remove the bolts on the rear of the housing,yours I think should have 12 holding on inspection cover,When you have removed cover,put car in neutral so you can turn the drive shaft,you will see side gear on left and right,in between those side gears is a round shaft ,turn the drive shaft around until you see at one end of that shaft is a 5/16 bolt holding the shaft in .Ok here comes the part you must be very careful!!!!!!
loosen the 5/16 bolt completely but don't pull it out yet,turn drive shaft until the shaft and bolt are pointing down where the shaft will be able to just clear the housing,ok now hold the pin from falling out with your left thumb and remove the bolt with your right hand,
let the shaft come completely out,
"most important" Don't let anyone turn any of the rear wheels or it will spin the spider gears right up and out!!!!!
Go to the broken axle side of the car or have someone who is helping do it,have them push the axle shaft in towards you,if your watching the axle being pushed in you will see a big horseshoe clip fall down,that is all that holds GM axles in!
once the clip falls you can push the axle out some with your fingers and pull it the rest of the way out,
when you reinstall your new axle you need to get that horseshoe clip that fell,insert the axle without turning it,push in it as far as it will go,then you slide the horseshoe clip in the grooved out spot on the axle,hold in in place while someone pulls the axle out where clip will seat it's self,now slide shaft back in with bolt hole on bottom,you may have to wiggle it a little,when you have it in far enough to get the bolt back in go ahead and tighten the bolt,the rest is cleaning the cover gasket off and installing a new one and tighten all the bolts the same and refill,don't forget to put your car back in park before you let it down,

Rear axle vibration


If you have that much play in the pinion, your pinion is getting worn, or the nut is loose. You may be able to find a rear end at an auto wrecker cheaper than anything.

SECTION 205-02B: Rear Drive Axle/Differential — Ford 8.8-Inch Ring Gear 2003 Mustang Workshop Manual IN-VEHICLE REPAIR Axle Shaft Removal
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 .
  1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04 .
  1. Remove the rear brake disc (2C026). For additional information, refer to Section 206-04 .
  1. Remove the differential housing cover (4033) and drain the lubricant. For additional information, refer to Differential Housing Cover in this section.
  1. Remove the differential pinion shaft (4211).
    1. Remove the differential pinion shaft lock bolt (4241).
    1. Remove the differential pinion shaft.
  1. s3b~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Do not damage the rubber O-ring in the axle shaft groove.
    Remove the U-washer (4N237).
    1. Push the axle shafts (4234) inboard.
    1. Remove the U-washer.
