You will have to remove the oil pump to remove the chain.

SOURCE: 1997 Cavalier timing chain cover

DO NOT PULL ON IT it does not come out, and that will cause more serious problems. You turn to adjust the timing.

2003 Saturn 2.2 ecotec will not start. Drove in, replaced battery and hasn't started since. Tried re learning Passlock and it did not work. Sounds like compression is gone. Pistons are moving, cam

timing belt broke.
take the gray plastic cover off and inspect the belt... I bet it is broke.
You may beable to get away with replacing it since it was not running when it broke... but I doubt it...

Does a 2003 cavalier have timing belt or chain?

Most overhead valve engines have a belt. You need to get your engine size, make, model and year and call your local parts house and they can tell you this for sure.

I have a saturn L200 series 2003 I have heard timing chain needs to be replaced by 100,000 miles but a mechanic told me I didn't have a timing chain is that correct?

There was a factory recall of the timing chain on the 2.2 Ecotec. This was done for me on my LW200, but then Saturn was still in business. Dealers are still around doing service though. Look over here for inside Saturn dope:

I am looking for the markings for a timing...chain...i just did a head replacement....and i realize now..that there are no markings on the timing chain........it has washed off...it's a 2003 chevy cavalier...

Man, that's a hard one for me, but what I would try, is go to an auto part, see if they would let you see one, so you can mark yours, I'am sure they will let you, good luck, sorry could not help much, just an idea.

Timing chain noise 2005 cavalier 2.2 ecotec

Just the guide is probably making the noise. So either a new guide or a new chain. I would start with guide first, unless chain looks loose or cruddy
