Question about 1997 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup
There is a sensor that fits over the linkage that may be your problem. I experienced pretty much the same thing. Costs about $70.00 to replace. I have a new one and would give it to you if I could get it to you!

You can remove the interlock off the gear shift or maybe spray some crc on it otherwise probably a loose wire or switch

never did it in a 2002 chvy first off...go to napa...or what ever your local part store is and buy a manual...easy repair...the manuel gives pictures...you replace one end from under the hood...the other you may have to get under the car...if your skinny no prob..if not ...get some jacks...book will explain all..easyl..repair...
