I have a 1990 300zx n/a 2+2 and no air will come out of the defroster vents at all. Just curious where I should start troubleshooting first.

Start by figuring out if the blower motor works, is there any air that comes out the heater or vents, if so most likely the cable that opens & closes the flaps that direct the air flow to the various vents and ports. these often get knocked loose during stereo installs and routing speaker wires.

SOURCE: PROBLEM WHEN SELECTING THE DIRECTION FOR THE AIR

Sounds like you have a supply vacuum problem. When you lose supply vacuum to the control head it defaults to defrost.

SOURCE: Dash vents will not blow air. Defroster and floor vents blow fine.

Is it a new vehicle? I had a new vehicle that had the same problem. Answer was that the holes weren't punched out of the vent.

SOURCE: All Air Conditioning blows our the defrost vents

Some thing you could look at would be this. The control is usually fed by a vacuum line or small hose thats is connected to your intake manifold.
With a cold engine, look for a skinny vacuum hose that runs from the intake toward the fire wall . It should be going inside the cab and connecting to the A/C vent control. Some times the hose becomes disconnected or splits or cracks due to heat under the hood.
Thats usually the trouble.
I hope this helps you.

SOURCE: blowes air throught defrost vents only

its a problem with the switching mechanism. you have to look up under the dash to see if you can see where the switching mechanism is. if you can not see it from there youll have to remove complete center dash

02 SILVERADO. AIR ONLY BLOWS OUT DEFROST VENTS. REPLACED CONTROL PANEL. NO LUCK

I had a similar issue on an 05 silverado. Air would only blow out of defrost vents. But this worked for me:

1) Unplug HVAC fuse for 10-30 seconds
2) Start truck
3) A/C comes out defrost - wait about 10 to 15 secs
4) A/C then starts coming out the floor vents for about 5 seconds
5) A/C then starts coming out the dash vents.
6) While the A/C is coming out the dash vents, turn A/C OFF (otherwise it cycles back to defrost for good).
7) Turn truck OFF
8) Restart truck and it should work fine

My 2008 Saturn Vue did the same thing, and it needed a "software update." Suggest that you contact your local Chevy dealer and see if there is a "silent recall" for this problem.
