Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

I have an 03 Ford Explorer 4.0 v6. We JUST replaced the timing chains. A week later, I had a belt shred and got that changed as well. Since then, it has started having a little rattling noise, which has turned into an obnoxiously loud rattling noise. No check engine light. The only other thing I have noticed is there is a random "shudder" for lack of a better word. Every now and again while it is idling ( red light, drive thru) it drops out, like it is idling down, but the rpm gauge does not move. Maybe unrelated but the rattle is driving me crazy and seems to be getting worse!

I would double check the belt tensioner, it may have been damaged during the timing chain replacement. Also if those chains use a tensioner, this could be the culprit as well

If toyota 03 camry is a chain how come the dealer ship here still tell me that is belt. Mine is 03 v6 Se camry. Please advise.

It is confirmed that it is a timing belt.....what made you think that it was a chain driven. ????? As long as it's V6 petrol engine, it is timing belt.

How do I change the Timing Chain close to the sidewall on the driver's side of the engine?

If thie engine in your explorer is the v6 4.0 I found this information online - You are not supposed to need to replace the timing chain(s) on a 4.0L SOHC V6. There are actually a total of FOUR, on this particular engine. This is a job that I would NOT recommend anyone even thinking of attempting to replace, if it's by anyone other than a FORD DEALER TECHNICIAN FAMILIAR WITH DIASSEMBLY/ASSEMBLY OF 4.0L SOHC V6 ENGINES. The reason for this is because, this particular engine is an interference engine BIG TIME!!! There are NO timing marks on this particular engine. They require FIVE dedicated Ford/Rotunda tools to service.

It is a 99 ford explorer and i need to find out how to change or fix the timing belt the engine is a 4.0 4x4 4- door

The Ford 4.0L engine is equipped with a timing chain, and sprockets, not a belt.

Perhaps you meant the accessory dirve (serpentine) belt?

If you need the procedure for replacing the serpentine belt, or timing chain post a comment to this thread and I will endeavor to monitor new activity and respond as soon as possible. I recommend that you

My 2002 ford escape have 120500 miles, do i have to replace the timing chain?

The 4-cylinder 2.0-liter 16-valves DOHC 127-hp Ford Zetec engine used a timing belt that needs replacement at 120k. After 2005 both, the 2.3-liter 4-cylinder and the 3.0-liter V6 engines have a maintenance-free timing chain.

I would recommend changing the water pump while you are at it.

The 2.0 timing belt labor is 4 hours and the water pump is 10 hours in addition. Not a fun job.

Here's the process:

Timing belt on Accord 2004 v6 models

2003 and up Honda Accord with 4 cylinder engines do indeed have a chain and the V6 has a belt which must be replaced at 110,000 miles. Why? Ask Honda, they designed the engines.
