Does your battery has enough charge to start the car? did you try to jump start it? What happens when you turn the key? could be anything, your starter, battery, a fuse, a relay, need more info here.

$1,700 it's a lot of money to not have the job guaranteed, I personally don't believe it's the computer, I incline more for a fuse or a relay. I could be your ignition switch too, I had that happen before, car just clicked when I turned the key, I remove the trim around the switch, wiggled the wires and it started!!. I'm assuming your car has automatic transmission, but in manual cars there's a switch under the clutch pedal, when you start the car the clutch has to activate that switch, that's why they won't start without the clutch all the way down, if that switch goes bad the car wont start..

SOURCE: 2004 mitsubishi outlander cooling fans not operating

TAKE A PEEK UNDER THE HOOD IN THE FUSE PANEL FOR THE FUSE AND RELAY FOR THE COOLING FAN. IF THE FUSE IS BLOWN THEN REPLACE IT. IF YOU SUSPECT THE RELAY TO BE BAD THEN TEST IT BY SWAPPING THE FAN RELAY WITH ANOTHER ONE WITH THE SAME PINS ON THE BOTTOM. MAKE SURE IT IS THE SAME SIZE AS WELL. HOPE THIS HELPS.. PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED. THANKS FOR AN HONEST RATING AND FOR USING FIX-YA. GOOD LUCK

There is a Recall to replace your cooling fan module because of this concern.

Open your hood and look at the black box bolted to your radiator fan by the battery. If it does not have a green dot on it, you have not had the replacement fan module installed.

Contact your local dealer with your VIN handy to verify the recall has not been done and to schedule an appointment.

If the recall has been done, verify if you have power coming out of the module to the fans, as the fans do burn out eventually.... but rarely both at once.

SOURCE: No start concern - Mitsubishi Outlander 2004

Check the IAC valve...or sometimes known as an electronic choke. That valve is how your engine gets air when the throttle body plate is closed. If the valve is stuck due to malfunction or carbon build up then it will cause that problem, and give you a rough idle at best.

Check your coolant level when engine cold, low level coolant does not circulate very well at idle and will cause poor heating,at higher RPM water pump turns faster to help circulate.

The first thing you should do is have the codes read. Most auto parts stores and many repair shops will do this for free. After you have them read you can post them back here and I can help you figure out what might be going on.
