Question about 1989 Chevrolet C2500

1 Answer

1989 C2500 Silverado Chevy P/U starts intermittently, when it feels like it, purrs like a kitten when running, then quits after 5-10 minutes. Never know when it's going to start again. Have replaced

Is it possibly the Oil Pressure Sending Unit? Or the Throttle Body Position Sensor? Almost clueless now. HELP!!

Hello Rigoberto, Thanks for your suggestion. Ultimately, I determined it was an intermittent internal connection in the pickup coil inside the distributor. Once replaced, the engine starts every time, even though it's a little rough now. I liked the kitten purr. I was told the pick up coil may not be right even though it measure 790 Ohms when tested before and after installation. Any suggestions to get rid of the rough run would be appreciated. Thanks to all for the support and responses.

if your losing fuel pressure after the pump runs the drain back valve in the pump has failed.

and i doubt that you are seeing enough fuel pressure to run a vortec engine.

low fuel pressure equals a non running vortec

That eliminates the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors. Have you checked the fuel injector itself for an open winding or stuck valve plunger? There should not be a steady 12 volts to the injector--if good injector, it would be spraying fuel steadily into the throttle body. But at least the engine should try to run if poorly. Take the injector out, dry it off with air, and intermittently apply 12 volts to one terminal while grounding the other. You should hear a click from inside every time you touch 12 volts. If not, replace it. If it does, it may be plugged with debris. Try blowing through it in reverse with compressed air.

I agree, disconnect the battery, and try resetting the CPU. Also if it got wet then there could be some random wire shorting out. Your CPU is located just above the wheel hub closest to your battery inside the engine cmptmnt.

1989 gmc 2500 305 engine back fire's on excelleration. Replaced Rotor and Cap. Also oxigen censer. Checked plugs, Wire's.

Backfire on acceleration could be caused by a worn lobe on the camshaft especially on a small block Chevy engine. You have to remove the valve covers and check the lift of each push rod. Sometimes it's quite obvious but sometimes it requires close inspection and even measuring the lift.

I need some old tricks to get an electric fuel pump working on a 1989 chevy c2500

If you have power to the pump it should run...If not running with power there, change the pump. Electric pumps are either good or trick.
