if memory serves me right you cannot adjust the cables on these cars.

Transmission linkage adjustment


the linkage should have an adjustment srcew on it turn it usually clockwise until you get the desired adjustment you want you may have to move the gear selector in order to get the desired tension that you want.look carefully at it youll be able to figure it out.

Generally when you have a problem with your car 'popping' out of a gear, it the shifter linkage. Shift linkage has a lot to do with the transmission. I recommend going to a shop you trust and asking them to check the shift linkage and adjust if needed. If that doesn't fix it, its your tranny and that will be expensive.

You have bad sycronizers in the gearbox. They are made of softer metal so they will wear out. They are used to smoothly shifte from one gear to another. How does the clutch feel? Any play in the shifter? Could be the clutch going bad, or play in the shifter also.

1982 rabbit shift linkage


There is a plastic ball that is in the shift linkage that also wears and is usually not included in the shift linkage bushing kit. It is attached to a metal piece and is bolted to the shift linkage. This is generally the problem if you already replaced the bushings.

Sometimes the linkage is out of adjustment but I would make sure that the ball is not worn first. They generally cost $5.00 - $8.00 or so.

If you need to adjust the linkage you can try the following, but if the bushings or the ball is worn adjustment will not do any good.

There is an adjustment on the shift rod that goes from the shifter to the transmission. It is a rod slipped into a tube with a locking collar or clamp.

The way that I do this is to make sure that your vehicle is in 1st gear and then loosen the bolt on the clamp.

Make sure that the clamp is loose enough so that the shaft can slip in the tube. Put the shifter in the 1st gear position and then tighten the clamp.

You may need to fiddle with this a little to get it in just the right spot.

This is much easier if you have an assistant.

Linkage for transmission


Why don't you start by getting the correct linkage. Maybe the tranny you replace is not exactly the same one. No difficult to replace, some of them have adjustments so maybe you might be able to get away with it, by adjusting it properly. Ensure the tranny is in the park position when adjusting, if properly adjusted, all the other gear shift should fall in place.

Difficulty in getting into first gear


Hi

Front wheel drive escorts have an adjustment on the gear linkage this can become out of alignment due to age & wear & tear.
There is a lot of linkage between the stick & gear box so occaisional adjustment is necessary it is a simple DIY task though a ramp is always helpful. The alignment problem is always more noticable when selecting first gear the adjustment is a bit trial and error but adjust either way until first becomes selectable. Also this is a fairly cheap fix if you choose to get a local mechanic to undertake the adjustment
