1996 chevy cavalier 2.2 backfire no start

Have gone through and checked coils, wires, fuel, and timing they are all good. The car cranks and backfires through the intake but will not start.

I was actually leaning more toward a bad ignition module. Im getting spark but it is almost like they are not firing at the right times and that is why it is backfiring through the intake. I removed the coils and they were fine.

Check for plugged converter by removing the 02 sensor to see if it starts.

SOURCE: no power rough idle car stalls strong exhaust smell

have you done a reaaly good tune up on the car? I would suggest replaceing the idle air control valve first, the a really good set of plugs and wires. I would also reccomend that you check the fuel regulator to be certain it is getting the required vacum to operate the release valve and let the fuel flow back into the tank.

here are a few things to check, egr system not working properly, vacuum leak at intake or manifold, damaged valve springs or sticking valves. all of the above will cause a backfire in intake.

91 chevy cavalier 2.2 engine turns but that's all . ECM ,coil, fuel injecter, fuel filter, and intank fuel pump replaced 2 days ago.

OK FIRST PULL A WIRE OFF A PLUG CRANK ENGINE OVER AND CHECK FOR SPARK. THEN YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO CHECK FUEL PRESSURE. THIS HAS TO BE DONE WITH A GAUGE TO SEE IF YOU ARE HOLDING 9-13 PSI ONCE YOU FIND OUT WHICH ONE IS MISSING YOU CAN FIND THE PROBLEM. IF YOU HAVE BOTH IT IS TIMING . THIS VEH HAS A TIMING CHAIN. SO FIND OUT AND RE POST AND WE CAN HELP YOU GET THIS STARTED.

96 cavalier wont start has fuel but no fire.... replaced the crank sensor, cam sensor, had the coils and ignition module check and the all passed all checked fuses and all are good.... any ideas

An idea would be checking the wires FROM either the cam or crank sensor. I had a VERY similar problem. I had a wire burnt on the wire harness....it was a factory problem. Take a look along the harness coming from these two components...wires could be burnt. Easy fix is to locate it and resplice the wires.

It could be many things, heres a list of basics you could check.
  1. wore or lose drive belt
  2. bad alternator
  3. bad battery
  4. clogged fuel filter
  5. bad fuel pump
  6. clogged fuel injectors
  7. faulty spark plugs or spark plug wires
  8. check the timing
  9. faulty ignition coil
  10. clogged air filter
  11. battery terminal connections loose or corroded.

1996 chevy cavalier wont fire

Need to actually, physically, check spark.Pull a plug wire off the plug, insert a medium size phillips head screwdriver into the spark plug wire boot, making sure it clicks in and engages.Lay the screwdriver's metal shank about a 1/4" from a metallic ground source (not the fuel line).Have someone crank the car over while you are looking for an arc between the screwdriver and ground. No arc...no spark...cheap easy way to check for spark and eliminate or not,the ignition system.

Check your battery terminals and clean them with a wire brush if they are corroded and make sure they are tight. If this doesn't work check the following: Fuel tank empty?, spark plugs incorrectly gapped if they are new, if old- maybe replace them, possibly faulty ignition coils, then maybe the crankshaft sensor is bad or timing chain is broken. I got the latter of information from the Haynes Repair Manual. Check this stuff in order. Good luck.
