Question about Cars & Trucks

Have a 2010 Ford Fusion check engine light came on had it scanned at Autozone. Code stated that it was my O2 sensor. Now my check fuel fill inlet warning has came on. I do not have a gas cap, it is the easy fuel. Could the problems be related?

SOURCE: code # P0141 and P0138

You said you changed the O2 sensors, which ones? I do believe that sensor 2 is the Catalyst efficiency monitor, it looks like an O2 but it's function is different. This sensor is behind the Catalytic converter, the O2 is in front. Bank one is the bank that # 1 cylinder is on, so the sensor that is defective is the 2nd sensor back on that sides exhaust pipe.

P0141 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Performance Bank 1 Sensor 2

P0138 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Circuit High Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 2

SOURCE: Check Engine Light - O2 Sensor - bank 1 running lean

you should have three oxygen sensors on your car, one for each bank of three cylinders; should be towards the Y pipe on each exhaust manifold. Additionally you should have one on the exhaust pipe before the cadilitic converter.

SOURCE: Check Engine Light Comes on Intermittently

The P0141 code points to the O2 sensor heater circuit. It could be that there is a short in the wiring to the O2 sensor or it could be that the O2 sensor heating element itself is bad. The code is for O2 sensor Bank 1 Sensor 2. Bank 1 means its the O2 sensor connected to the exhaust pipe that runs to cylinder #1. Sensor 2 means that it is likely the O2 sensor after the catalytic converter on the same exhaust pipe.

I can see that you've done the right things, but something is still amiss... Mitsubishi says

A code P0421 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

  • The catalytic converter is no longer functioning properly
  • An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
  • A sparkplug is fouled
Measure the voltage at the oxygen sensor on Bank 1 (the rear sensor, or the sensor after the converter). In fact, it would be a good idea to test each oxygen O2 sensor while you're at it.

One thing to note is that many vehicle manufacturers offer a longer warranty on emissions-related parts. So if you have a newer car but it's out of it's bumper-to-bumper warranty, there still may be warranty on this type of problem. Many manufacturers give a five year, unlimited mileage warranty on these items. It's worth checking into.

SOURCE: check engine light on 2003 toyota tacoma, O2 sensor?

An O2 sensor code is a tricky one. It could mean SEVERAL different things, and I know how bad it sucks to hear this, but your best bet is to take it in and have a diagnostic ran on it at either a dealer or a good mechanic shop with a computer they can hook up to it. I had an "O2" code come up a while back on another car I used to have, and literally spent weeks and hundreds of dollars trying to fix it, and never did. Finally out of desperation took it in, paid the $90, and they found the problem and fixed it in like 30 minutes. Something I would have never even thought of was causing it (can't remember off the top of my head). After that I stopped wating time and money on check engine lights. One comes on in my car, I take it to have it ran for free at and auto parts store just to make sure it's not a loose gas cap or something, just to get an idea of what I'm looking at, then go and make an appointment to have to hooked up to a diagnostic computer to track down the problem. Good luck, and hope this helps save you some time and money.

Why would one bank of my engine be running lean?

If check engine light is on. Get it scanned to find the problem code. They will do this at any auto parts store for free, It may be a bad 02 sensor. Get it scanned. A vehicle can fail a state-mandated smog test because a bad, or faulty, oxygen sensor. remove the O2 sensor from the exhaust pipe ahead of the catalytic converter and look for a change in performance. Check fuel fill inlet

If the check fuel fill inlet lamp or CHECK FUEL FILL INLET message
comes on, the fuel fill inlet may not have properly closed. The inlet may
have stuck open or debris may be preventing the inlet from fully closing.
At the next opportunity, safely pull off the road, turn off the engine,
open the fuel filler door and remove any visible debris from the fuel fill
opening. Insert either the fuel fill nozzle or the fuel fill funnel (see
Refilling with a portable fuel container for funnel location) provided
with the vehicle several times to dislodge any debris and/or allow the
inlet to close properly. If this action corrects the problem, the check fuel
fill inlet lamp or CHECK FUEL FILL INLET message may not reset
immediately. It may take several driving cycles for the check fuel fill inlet
lamp or CHECK FUEL FILL INLET message to turn off. A driving cycle
consists of an engine start-up (after four or more hours with the engine
off) followed by city/highway driving. Continuing to drive with the check
fuel fill inlet lamp or CHECK FUEL FILL INLET message on may cause
the service engine soon lamp to turn on as well.
WARNING: The fuel system may be under pressure. If you hear
a hissing sound near the fuel filler door (Easy Fuel "no cap"
fuel system), do not refuel until the sound stops. Otherwise, fuel may
spray out, which could cause serious personal injury.

Well code 431 means the computer does not think the catalytic converter is working correctly. The engine computer uses data from the O2 sensors to monitor the cat.
The actual problem could be the cat, one of the O2 sensors, a fuel problem, or other things. The O2 sensors would need to be watched with a scanner to find the issue.

You should be able to change the fuel filter and the o2 sensor with basic knowledge. The fuel filter is in the fuel line and the o2 sensor just screws in.

Hello, If your engine light is on, you have a problem. You can get FREE scans at Autozone, Advance, or Oreilys autoparts stores.

The gas can have something to do with your problem as well as the additive. Most likely you have an O2 sensor gone bad. When the sensors work, they make adjustments to the timing in the engine. If your O2 sensors are bad, even one, then the engine can not adjust to the fuel.

If you have an 2004-2008 model V-8 with double cams, there are additional problems with a part called a "Cam Phaser". Should your scan reveal a phaser problem, Ford has an additional mileage and length of coverage Warranty in effect. The "Cam Phaser" can affect rough idle and running in the V-8 engine.

I hope my solution is helpful to you.

Best way is to go to Autozone or Oreillys and get a free scan. They could also do a Starter draw test to see if it is okay.

The scan will tell you what the Code is for the Check light and Autozone or Oreillys can reset your Check light. If the Battery boiled away the water, then it is either overcharging or you have a high draw of current.

There use to be a test of taking off the Battery cable while the engine was running and if the Alternator was good your car would keep running. But with the new Electronics using this method may hurt the delicate Electronics somewhere else in the car.

The best thing to do is go to Auto Zone and get your Hyundai scanned for a DTC code. That would tell us which O2 sensor has gone bad. You have three O2 sensors and one of them has gone bad, the O2 sensor sends signals to the ecm to control the air fuel mixture so it will not run to rich or to lean which is causing you to fail the state inspection. Good luck and keep me posted on what the DTC codes are, be glad to help.
