SOURCE: transmission does not shift out of 1st gear

There is a vacuum line that is connected to a vacuum modulator on the transmission. The vacuum modulator looks like a tiny inline fuel filter on the right rear of the transmission. Remove the vacuum line from the modulator, if transmission fluid spills out when the rubber hose is removed the modulator is punctured. The engine will **** your transmission fluid through the vacuum line and into the intake system and burn it through combustion. If the modulator is punctured you must have it replaced.

I have a 1988 Corvette with a 700R4, not wanting to shift from 1st. to 2nd. unless I leave my foot off the gas for it to shift. Contact mac1212sr@aol.com

Transmissions have "synchros" that adjust the speed when shifting from one gear to the next, because the engine's RPMs, while correct for, say, 1st gear, are too high to shift to 2nd gear.

If you're really careful, and an expert driver, you can shift a manual transmission from one gear to the next without using the clutch at all.

However, you seem to have a transmission problem with the 1-2 synchros.

Rpm are very high and wont shift in to gear unless i let go of the gas pedal

Before guessing at transmission problems, check the fluid level (car warmed up, engine running in Park on level ground) and have the PCM scanned for trouble codes FIRST. This guide is meant for problems that do not show up as PCM codes (like shift A&B solenoid failures, for example)
1-2 shift does not happen at WOT until you let off the gas: Best case: try replacing the TPS. Middle case: leak in the 2nd gear apply circuit (servo assembly or 1-2 accumulator). Doublecheck by using the pressure gauge and watch for a big drop when the PCM commands 2nd gear. Worst case: poor line pressure rise (see below)
1-2 shift is delayed and harsh, may not shift into OD: Check TPS for smooth and linear electrical response over the entire range of motion. If not, replace.
Thank you for using Fixya and here is a link for you to retrieve your DTC codes. http://www.troublecodes.net/GM/

Hard shifting from 1st to 2nd

I have been hearing a possible solution for this problem is changing the oil filter in the trans oil pan. But ive been looking all over for a solutionand thats the only legit one ive found. It said when the oil gets clogged it doesnt flow to the transmission as nicely as normal therefore leading to lagging changes

1992 GMC Suburban not shifting into OD, Transmission Modulator?

The shift down linkage on the carburetor below the gas pedal cable might need to be adjusted to increase the hydraulic pressure on the internal clutch plates in the transmission it shows you how to do that in a car manual.

20 year old vacuum hoses are done. Replace all you can. The little plastic ones too. They control everything, transmission, computer, fuel, brakes, everything.
