1990 ford ranger, 2.9l, V6, starts and runs rough, however after 20 minutes rpms go way down, backfires, and will only go 10 to 15 miles per hour. Changed plugs, plug wires, ditributor cap and rotor still the same.

SOURCE: 1990 f150 truck cranks up but got to press gas

Well,check for a vacuum leak,by starting it cold,and have someone keep it running while you spray some brake cleaner aT VARIOUS SPOTS WHERE VACUUM LINES MEET,or toward back of intake manifold,but not near air cleaner.
Any change in rpm down or up indicates a leak. don-ohio

2005 chevy equinox runs rough between approx 38 and 45 miles per hour. Changed plugs and wires as well as cleaned fuel injectors.


Please elaborate on "runs rough"
Is it slipping gears.... hesitating on acceleration... missing... smoking... backfiring?

I got a 1990 ford ranger 2.9 v6 its running very crappy


Fluctuating an high RPMs sounds like a leaking or missing vaccume hose to me, I had simmilar problem found open hole with hose off, replaced it now the RPMs are under 1000 again.
As for the stalling I also am having a simmilar problem, and am finding air in the fuel rail, I suspect the fuel pump is going.
I cant go more than a mile without problems.

first go to an auto partstore and have the code checked. most do it for free. could be coil, fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter or even a bad gas cap. but the dianogstic test should pin point the problem.

1987 Ranger V6 - engine starts clanking like a diesel engine and starts backfiring thru the air intake box. turn off engine, feel backside of radiator and it is stone cold. randomly, the engine quiets down...


I have the same engine. I think when I had this problem it was the water pump going. I think that when it gets hot, the engine goes into a frenzy. I had lent someone my car and that is what greeted me when I got it back. I know changing the water pump is more difficult, but mine was 20 years old before I replaced it! Not too bad.

1990 ranger 2.3L runs rough.at idle and when cruising. good acceleration. changed out the obvious, plugs, cap, filters etc. no luck. runs fine for awhile with egr sensor disconnected than reconnected, but...


There will be an egr control solenoid that allows vacuum to reach the egr solenoid, sometimes it will be called the egr vent solenoid. It is probably bad.
