Question about 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL450

1 Answer

Power steering I fixed a new power steering pump due to stiff steering. The new pump got jammed a few days later burning the belt and one of the adjustment pulley. Changed the pump again and this time the pulley of the pump broke a day later. Anybody got an idea what's causing the pumps to get stiff on my car.

2 possibilities.
1.most likely your rack and pinion is out due to faulty power steering pump.

Power steering stiff and jumpy...when the weel is turned hard either way the engine belts actually slip and the alternator stops charging. Is my power steering pump burned out ?

I would change the belt first. Power steering is required for all turning but does get a little more usage during hard turns. You will want to check the fluid levels of the power steering pump as well.

Sounds like the power steering pump has failed.
You could take the serpentine belt off and check the pump pulley.

My power steering was fine then suddenly it started to go stiff and then a slight whine when turning the wheel. refilled the power steering fluid, it took a whole 1 litre jug and was fine for a few...

It should like you may have a leak if it took a whole litre. Once you fix the leak you may also find the power steering pump still makes noise. This can be repaired by replacing the pump. I hope this helps.

Power steering keeps going stiff all the time

There are 2 things that cause power steering to go stiff. The power steering pump itself either from failure or "lack of fluid" and the rack and pinion assy under the car.
Most of the time the failure is the power steering pump itself. The teflon rollers fail inside the pump and it either stops providing an output pressure or it seizes up. You can loosen the power steering pump belt then try to rotate the pump by hand. It should move by hand. If it feels like it is intermittently locking up as you rotate, it the teflon rollers have failed and the pump will need to be replaced.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Power steering pump is stiff on occasion not only in the morning but sometimes during the day also.fluid is at normal level. belts have been replaced last year?

The fluid check valve built into the power steering pump may be bypassing your pressurized fluid back to the reservoir, and not assisting your steering input. You may need a new pump. The only way to know for sure is to have the power steering output checked with a guage set.

Battery light is on and stiff to steer the wheel

Sounds like the serpentine bellt has come off the drive pulleys. this belt is the link between the crankshaft pulley and all the other pulleys. it drives the power steering pump, a/c compressor, and your alternator.
Stiff steering due to no Power steering pump activity and the battery light is on due to the alternator not charging the battery and supplying power to vehicle components.
