I have a 1998 chevy w/t 1500 short bed pu. The gauges don't work, the transmission doesn't shift out of first and the check engine light stays on. I've been told it's an ignition switch module that's bad and chevy has had a lot of problems with this. Thanks!

If you have have a DTC code for some time, then there has been a problem with the transmission that may have started out as a minor problem, but has gotten bad enough so that you notice a problem with shifting.
The proper way to troubleshoot this type of problem is to have the car connected to a class 2 scan tool (like the dealer uses), so that it can communicate with the transmission control module directly. This is about the only way to find out directly what the problem is.
Anything else would be guesswork. You do NOT have to take your car to a dealer to be serviced, but you can go to Auto Zone or Parst Source and ask them if they could scan your truck to properly troubleshoot this type of problem. The best thing is that it's free to have it scanned there and they can give you the how to do it your self repaire instructions for the parts you need.
Good luck and hope this helps. The DTC indicates that a transmission related OBD II failure has occurred. The Transmission Control Module (TCM) controls a dedicated Service Transmission Lamp (STL) which illuminates when a fail reports by certain non-emissions related TCM diagnostics. The TCM has no direct control of the engine MIL, but if a transmission fault occurs that is emissions related, the engine MIL must illuminate.

I have a 1991 S-10 with a 4.3L V-6 (automatic). My issue is that it seems to shift into its final drive ratio early, around 30-35 MPH. By the time I reach the speed limit (which is 70) the engine is running at very high RPM (relative to my experience; this is my first automatic transmission). Is this normal for an S-10 with automatic transmission? I notice that the Overdrive kicks in at 40 MPH, which seems low also.
